Changes galore as Sharks freshen up

Sharks coach John Plumtree has made sweeping changes to the team that lost to the Cheetahs last week.

With injury and poor form cutting a swathe through the squad, the coach has taken the opportunity to freshen up this week, handing starts to two loan players, in Piet Lindeque and Derick Minnie. In perhaps the most significant change, though, Jean Deysel becomes the season’s third captain, taking over from the benched Keegan Daniel.

Wiehahn Herbst moves from tighthead prop to loose, to replace Beat Mtawarira (injured), while Craig Burden (in for benched Kyle Cooper) and Jannie du Plessis complete the front row. Danie Mienie, summoned to join the tour at late notice, stands to make his Super Rugby debut off the bench. At lock, Anton Bresler starts with Pieter-Steph du Toit for the first time, with Franco van der Merwe benched.

Daniel’s spot at number 8 goes to Tera Mtembu in his first start at this level, with Minnie at 6 and Deysel at 7 forming a strong flank combination. Marcell Coetzee joins Daniel on a 5-man forward bench.

Unlucky Sean Robinson is the only fit member of the tour party to miss out on selection, with Lindeque becoming the fourth player to wear the number 11 jersey in as many games. Frans Steyn starts at outside centre in place of Paul Jordaan (injured), while Charl McLeod starts for Cobus Reinach in the final change to the team. S’bura Sithole will play off the bench along with Reinach.

Sharks:
1. Wiehahn Herbst
2. Craig Burden
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Anton Bresler
5. Pieter-Steph du Toit
6. Derick Minnie
7. Jean Deysel (Capt)
8. Lubabalo Mtembu
9. Charl McLeod
10. Patrick Lambie
11. Piet Lindeque
12. Meyer Bosman
13. Francois Steyn
14. Odwa Ndungane
15. Riaan Viljoen

Replacements
16. Kyle Cooper
17. Danie Mienie
18. Franco van der Merwe
19. Keegan Daniel
20. Marcell Coetzee
21. Cobus Reinach
22. S’bura Sithole

  • Interesting to say the least! So many changes almost makes it look like Plum has resigned hmself to a loss by giving so many players a break, even in the midst of an injury crisis. Not saying they wont give their best, just not convinced re his thinking……again!

  • I was about to say “but who covers 10 from the bench” and then I realised that we are playing a total of 4 guys in the starting lineup that has played 10 for the sharks, 3 of which played 10 for the boks…

  • @Vince (Comment 4) : TBh, i dont see it as a break, i think our loosies are much better equipped than what we have for the whole season. To be fair on Burden we all know he is really good player, he hasn’t had enough game time since he was selected for the Boks last season he has basically just sat on the bench, and the times he has come on he wasn’t great yes, but a player needs to play himself into match fitness.

  • I hope Frans is not exposed on defence at 13.

I can only assume Plum has given up on trying to beat the Chiefs, and has decided to rest / rotate some players.

  • Good:

Herbst at 1 is better than Jannie at 1
    Very physical lock combo
Loose trio is very physical and should compete well at breakdown
Lindeque is a form player and glad to see him start
Deysel might be just what we need as skipper in this match

    Bad:

Cooper one of our only go-forward men
    Line-outs might be shambolic
What message does it send axing the captain?
    McLeod
Lindeque is a 13… pick him there.
    Steyn….

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : I agree with you, but Cooper needed a rest, he has played every single game so far, so maybe Plum feels this game is a bridge too far and has given his key people that are left a rest while giving game time to the splinter gatherers. Makes sort of sense. But I seriously have a good feeling for this game.

Reinach has a weird double step before he passes, it screws up any fast ball we get badly. Really needs to work on that.

But after the Cheetahs game I had made a concerted decision not to watch any other Sharks match this season as I end up alienating the entire family after the kak they have been dishing up lately. Whether I would have been able to keep the decision remains to be seen as you see I have already got plans to break it this weekend :)

  • @PTAShark (Comment 29) : The Steyn of a few years ago (even though not the fastest player) will look like Usain Bolt vs the current incarnation of Steyn. I reckon there are some tight head props that will beat him in a foot race the shape he is in at the moment. Steppers like Nanai-Williams, Horrell, Robinson and co will leave him grabbing at air.

    9.Brendon Leonard
    10.Aaron Cruden
    11.Asaeli Tikoirotuma
    12.Richard Kahui
    13.Charlie Ngatai

Plus Anscombe and Nanai-Williams off the bench.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 44) : no. That was a case of poor grammar on the Sharks website being picked up and misinterpreted by many other sites with no though of checking facts.

Lindeque played junior rugby for the Sharks from 2010-2012, then moved to Tukkies at the beginning of the year. He played Varsity Sup for them and has been playing Vodacom Cup for the Bulls.

I’m not sure what his contractual situation is in Pretoria, but he’s DEFINITELY not a Lions player.

The Bulls and Piet must’ve had a good chuckle here. Nollis Marais is about the only Bulls coach I rate and he’s been working with Marais in the Varsity Cup

  • What I like about this team is the balance we’re seeing in the loosies.

Each player is a specialist where they will play in this game. Minnie and Deysel gives us bulk, experience and hopefully go forward that we would not have gotten with other combo’s. Deysel has been our best forward. Minnie should be rested.

Keegan and Marcell has been playing badly and needed some time on the bench.

  • I like the combo of our locks.

I know I’m the one that said Franco adds value to our line-outs, but lets see how lasting his impression was. Piet and Anton should have learned a few things by now.

Piet is a good ball carrier and Anton is one of the most commited players on defense.

  • Viljoen was good and deserves his second start.

Steyn has been improving and will probably be better suited at 13 at this stage, imo.

Always thought Lindeque had what it takes and he played wing for the Sharks u/21 a few times.

I’m not sure about Charl, but maybe replacing a young player who made a couple of bad decisions with and experienced one, is not such a bad decisions.

This is patch-work team and the key players that aren’t injured are off-form PLUS we play the Chiefs on their home ground.

    I would have gone with: 15. Viljoen 14. Robinson 13. Lindeque 12. Frans 11. Sithole 10. Lambie 9. Reinach 1. Herbst 2. Cooper 3. Jannie 4. Bresler 5. Steph du Toit 6. Daniel 7. Deysel 8. Coetzee

  • Well, Plum is very brave by selecting this team. And changing so many players… Which might not be a bad thing if I think about it. It will make those players stop and think, and realize that they are replaceable if one of the other guys perform well!!!

I also like JD as captain. And FS probably vice captain..

  • @Saffex (Comment 67) : just one question, don’t you think three newbies in the back line could be too much? Surely you want these guys to settle a bit first.

  • @Saffex (Comment 67) :
And although I agree that Steyn at his best is a better option than bosman I do think he has been solid enough to be retained with the current injury situation. When jp and mvovo comes back I’d like too see a midfield of Steyn and Lindeque. That’s why I like Steyn in the midfield for this game again and Lindeque starting to gain some confidence and readiness for next week.

I also feel marcel and Keegan has been of form and should not start, but on form that’s a pretty good loose trio.

Agree with you with all the rest. Copper and Reinach has been two of our better players, can’t understand why Plum decided to drop them. Even with Reinach’s horrible decision right there at the end, I think Plum should have backed him. He’s young, he needs to learn and will with every game he plays.

  • Team should have looked like this in my opinion:

    1. Herbst
    2. Cooper
    3. du Plessis
    4. Bresler
    5. du Toit
    6. Daniel (c)
    7. Deysel
    8. Mtembu
    9. Reinach
    10. Lambie
    11. Viljoen
    12. Bosman
    13. Lindeque
    14. Ndungane
    15. Steyn

    16. Burden
    17. Mienie
    18. van der Merwe
    19. Coetzee
    20. Minnie
    21. McLeod
    22. Robinson

  • @Letgo (Comment 75) : You have lost so much already, give these kids the freedom to express themselves and not be hindered by the fear of failure and getting the boot – that is how I would play it.

I would have taken Tyler Fisher on tour as well and played him before Robinson

  • @Letgo (Comment 76) : I just see no value in Bosman, he is too limited as an attacking player.

I can’t see Frans working at 13, you need out and out pace out wide. His pace is good for 12, but not 13 or 15.

  • @Letgo (Comment 77) : Partly because they are being played out of position. Coetzee is not a 6, Daniel is not an 8

  • Happy about McLeod! Lambie will be at his best again with good service and plenty of time. Cobus is best off the bench.
As we currently do not attack from deep, Frans should be potent at 13 on attack close to the line. No need for great speed if we play support rugby.
Cooper needs the rest and Burden needs the game time so Cooper will be great for impact.
Come on boys, nothing to lose!
