Spare a thought for Everitt

Maks van Dyk, the Baby Bok tighthead, must have cut a lonely figure at Sharks XV practice yesterday as he tried to figure out how the hell he was going to move the scrum machine back all on his own…

Obviously I jest, but in all the talk of serious injuries cutting a swathe through the Sharks Super Rugby squad, we need to also bear in mind the impact that these will have on Sean Everitt and his Vodacom Cup side, who suffered their first defeat of the season in going down narrowly to the EP Kings on Saturday. While the decision by John Plumtree to not rely too heavily on Sharks XV players has ruffled a few feathers, there have nonetheless been a few losses, with the prop stocks particularly hard hit.

Everitt has built his campaign thus far on continuity, with rotation in the front row pretty much the only regular feature of an otherwise largely-unchanged side. Sure, he’s had to absorb losses to the SA Under 20 tour side, but will at least welcome back the likes of Tyler Fisher, Hanco Vetner, Plank Meyer and Stefan Ungerer this week.

Finding a pair of props to replace Danie Mienie and Allan Dell, though, will be his first priority and while we shouldn’t be too surprised to see SA Under 20 star Marne Coetzee pick as back-up to van Dyk this week, finding a starting option at loosehead will be more difficult.

The other forced change should see Jaco van Tonder start at wing in place of S’bura Sithole, who received a belated call-up to join the tour party on Monday.

Everitt will further need to decide which of his three top scrumhalves to start, as well as picking between the in-form Guy Alexander, and Baby Bok Johan Meyer, in the number 8 jersey.

  • Have to look to Simon Kerrod. Still u21 & been scrumming grown men in the Community Cup. Put him on loosehead, Franco Marais at Hooker & Maks on tight = extra 3 loose-forwards

  • A couple of years ago you couldn’t find a tighthead anywhere on the planet, now it is at loosehead where the problems are…

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 1) : I didn’t realise Simon had played 1… thought he was a three.

He’s PBHS, so I back him all the way.

  • I recall him playing there for Sharks u19, so he’s played 1 at a decent level. Who else has?

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 4) : did he? I remember Nic Roebeck being the 1 last year. Did Simon play the year before?

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 4) : played a bit of under 19 rugger in 2011, but was always back-up to Dell and van Dyk.

  • Yeah he needed to prove himself & did so at Community Cup. Started for Rovers, who could give most Vodacom Cup sides a run for their money. If another Lions player is brought into the mix here, I’ll lose it. What a mess

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 7) : You’re clearly a passionate fellow who knows a fair bit about what’s going on at lower levels of the game in Durbs. Always good to have those insights here.

Regarding the Lions players…. I think we need to keep perspective. I have no real issue with the inclusion of van Rensburg, given three injuries in the same position and no other available looseheads who have even played Vodacom Cup for the Sharks, never mind anything higher.

Franna Kleinhans should have been given a shot ahead of Minnie, though.

  • Deucullen vd merwe played u19 no. 1 and started with Allan Dell. Got an injury was out four games. Max came off the bench. Deucullen is now starting for collegians 1st as no.1. There are good loose heads but the tight heads seem to get the picks.

  • Deucullen also u21. It bugs me that contracted players get the nod even when they have lost form. I am made to understand it is cheaper to play the contracted player than a non contracted player.

  • @bobby 26 (Comment 12) : must say, though, that against those hardened Argie boys, good to have a physical aggro guy like Robbie in the mix. Let’s hope he doesn’t get sent off TOO early in the match.

I believe he kicked puppy on Friday? Is that right?
