The bonecollector makes his return!

The Sharks, already severely decimated by injury, suffered the further setback of losing the resurgent Francois Steyn to injury during the loss to the Highlanders this past weekend.

In a rare piece of good news, the Sharks have confirmed via twitter that his replacement on the steam ship to Oz is the blockbusting Willem Alberts.

Having come through 2 games for the Vodacom Cup team unscathed, the 120kg behemoth will be a welcome addition to a pack that has lacked big ball carriers to make an impact at the fringes and on defence.

Lets hope that the big guy is fully recovered and raring to go!

  • So if Alberts can play right away and Bissie is part of the group then the team should look something like this

    15 Viljoen, 14 JP, 13 Lindeque, 12 Bosman, 11 Mvovo, 10 Lambie, 9 Charl, 8 Alberts, 7 Marcell 6 Deysel (although Plum will play Keegan), 5 Franco / Bresler 4 Steph, 3 Jannie, 2 Cooper 1 Herbst

JC, Bissie, Bresler, Keegan/Minnie/Mtembu, Meyer, Ndungane, Sithole

  • I wouldn’t move JP out of position though, I’d give Lindeque another shot.

  • I’d also instruct Deysel and to and extent Cooper (right buildt) to do a pilfering job so that Marcell and Alberts can concentrate more on ball carrying. Our guys tried to get their hands on the ball almost every time last week, but since stealing balls in the ruck is pretty much a specialist position we were very ineffective and got penalized.

  • Good news, Mtembu looks like he will be ready to play this weekend, which means Keegan definitely will not be needed on the bench. I’m afraid of minnie anywhere near the field, he works hard at the breakdown, but clearly referees will penalize him, something we don’t need.

I would still start with Alberts and have Mtembu on the bench.

  • But I’m going to guess Plum will leave the forwards pretty much the same, with Alberts maybe coming in for either Mtembu or Marcell.

Not sure why people want to play Lindeque at 13.

Not only did he have a ‘mare last week (particularly his handling), but he is a 21-year old prodigal son very new to SR and the Sharks systems, and was even played at wing for the VC team last year. What has suddenly made him a SR option at 13?

I love it when the young ones succeed but he had a horror game and his confidence is probably shot. That missed tackle(on Ben Smith I think) cost us a try at the worst possible time in the game.

I just always thought he has potential and don’t think the few minutes he played at 13 should be his final judgement.

I don’t know what the future plans for him is, but if there is a possibility that he might stay I would still like to see him get a start at 13. I know he didn’t look good last weekend, but I wouldn’t want to disrupt the backline and move JP back to thirteen where he hasn’t played in a while. Although, I wouldn’t be mad if he is selected there.

I think Odwa will replace JP on the wing though and that too me would be a mistake.

Not aimed at you specically; I’ve seen this notion gain some momentum here over the last few weeks. I really dont understand it.

If he at least had a track record of performance in the position at age group level at the Sharks, it could have helped; but he doesn’t. He has been played at wing for some time now.

Piet is a good talent that should never have been let go by the Sharks. He is already about 100kg and has a 100m pb of sub-11 sec. But to play him at 13 against the Reds would be unfair and plain crazy.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 17) : The best we as supporters can do now is to just support the players the way you support a club team, enjoy the good moments and forget those pesky game losing mistakes.

Lindeque was thrown in the deep end and we didn’t have much choice other using him. Costly mistakes were always on the cards. Poor guy did all he could under the circumstances.

I’m gonna try this attitude with all our players and see for how long I can keep it up.

  • @Letgo (Comment 2) : Did you not watch the game ? that loose forward trio are as one dynamic as you could possibly hope to find in this competition. Our problem was that we were unable to come up with anything on attack ,despite retaining possession and territory in that closing 10 minutes.

We need x-factor ,we need players with guile, intelligence and slight of hand. How do NZ manage to wipe the floor with us with slighter second rowers? Because brain trumps brawn.

We need to (once again)tidy up our basics and structures, review our game plan and look at the players we have at our disposal and find a game plan that suits them.

Lets not forget what we have in a player like Keegan Daniel; a game breaker and an enigma in terms of South African Rugby, whose skills outshine our best back-line play makers.

IMO; Kiwis and Oz would have played Daniel at 12 and he would have been a test veteran by now. They’d probably have kept Spies at wing too. Successfully.

  • Disagree with all of you ,and feel frustrated at the level of dogma in our country.

Our school boys repeat set plays, structure and breakdown drills till they puke, I know because I’m guilty of coaching my own team of lighties exactly that. The only way we win is to out play the other teams structures. We grind wins through multiple phases and body aching contact just to make a few inches, whereas the Kiwis and Ausies can sniff out an opportunity and pounce on it.

  • We need to tidy up our defensive structures and basics .Then we need to invest in dynamic intelligent players like Keegan and Mthembu.

Its why we see our back line players flop when moving unions , because for the most part ,their core skills aren’t broad enough to cope with a change in style. If they’re not faster or stronger than their opponents they come up empty handed.

  • Just to stir the pot. Could this be Plumtree?

“The Scottish Rugby Union has appointed a new national team head coach but will not name him until the end of May.

On Friday, the SRU announced that interim head coach Scott Johnson would take on the role of director of rugby .

Johnson led the side in this year’s Six Nations Championship after the departure of Andy Robinson in November .

SRU chief executive Mark Dodson said: “We have concluded our search for a head coach and will announce that in coming weeks.”

Dodson admitted that the new coach was under contract at another club and told BBC Scotland that the coach was not local.

“I think it’s safe to say he’s not from Scotland,” he said, but from South Africa.”
