Daniel responds to “Afrikanergate”

Sharks captain Keegan Daniel has raised the middle finger at suggestions that there is a rift between English and Afrikaans players in the Sharks squad, with him at the centre of it.

The story appeared in Beeld and Sport24 this morning and has attracted rounded criticism from all sides, with most considering the story baseless and an example of gutter journalism at its worst.

Scrumhalf Charl McLeod, an Afrikaans speaker himself, took to Facebook to rubbish the report earlier, calling the story “utter BS” and a number of other Sharks players that we managed to speak to were similarly dismissive of the story, claiming it is “rubbish” and that Daniel has a great relationship with the Afrikaans players in the squad.

None could have summed it up better than the skipper himself, though, with his typically succinct tweet this morning:

  • The Sharks have had a tough season and I think it is time that fans including on this site should cut the playerS and coaches some slack. I am also hugely disappointed but I have no doubt that everyone in the set up is pulling their weight. Sure the coach’s performance will be assessed and there is a good chance of changes but in the meantime give them some encouragement and not condemn every decision

  • I just read the Beeld story. What a terrible trash-piece of writing.
How can you begin an article about rugby with: “The Anglo-boer war seems to continue in Sharks rugby”
WTF man? What kind of an idiot starts a sports piece with such a hurtful divise comment? Is the Beeld about to go under that this oke has to cause as much kak as possible to sell copies. Secondly, as Rob Houwing points out, the story claims a statement was made without even one quote from Daniel to prove it.
Embarrassed to have studied journalism, if this the quality of hacks on the scene.

  • Talking about eating people.

So I was playing rugby in Essex a few years ago and my mate Nico had broken the line and was bearing down on their fullback.

To which his brother (the fullbacks brother), on the sidelines, shouts “Eet hom Dawid, eet hom”.
My mate Nico, in full flight shouts at Dawid – “Nee asb, moet my nie eet nie Dawid”. Loads of saffa boys in my team all packed out laughing; Nico dotted down under the posts.

Ate myself dik and still love them all. Actually even more now than before, because they’re almost impossible to get in Germany and are way overpriced and the quality sucks if and when they’re available.

A friend of mine’s dad was the magistrate of Kwa-Dukuza (Stanger). They lived in a huge old colonial house built on a hectare of land covered in avo and mango trees. My friend’s mom used to pay us each 50c to rake up the leaves in autumn.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 150) : @robdylan (Comment 152) :
The value of having a PR agency is that they work around the clock to protect the integrity of your brand so that the players don’t have that kind of pressure put on them. This is now the second situation in 2013 where the press release was too late to limit the damage caused to the Sharks brand. I know the Sharks utilize a Durban ad agency for PR, but they really need to re-think the value they are getting out of them.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 153) : That’s not necessarily the agency’s fault. How fast was the Sharks management with a statement? It’s their job to actually provide the content and the agency’s to spin it for public consumption.

I used to create content for the online internal news website of the Imperial Group. Early one Sunday morning a Tanker Services truck caught fire on the N1 near the Lynnwood Rd offramp.

Since we were responsible for communications, the Pretoria newspapers wanted an official statement right there and then. This was before the MD had even heard about the truck, so I had the job of calling him up and both breaking the news and asking for a statement to write up for the hounds.

9am Sunday morning we sent out a press release and that was that. I know it’s only a bloody truck, but everything went smoothly because the MD responded quickly.
