Minimal changes for Sharks

The Sharks team announced to take on the Force sees little change from the team that went down to the Reds.

There is a single change in the backline, Odwa Ndungane starting ahead of Piet Lindeque on the wing. Odwa played his 100th match off the bench last week. Lindeque drops to the bench after an unsure performance against the Reds.

Amongst the forwards we see Jannie du Plessis starting ahead of Wiehahn Herbst. Herbst had a good outing against the Reds and his exclusion from the starting fifteen boggles the mind. The Sharks also start the match without Pieter-Steph du Toit, Anton Bresler starting ahead of the youngster. Why Franco van der Merwe is left in the starting fifteen again, boggles the mind.

Willem Alberts starts his first match of the season, replacing Jean Deysel, who drops to the bench. The bench has a five – two split, with Monde Hadebe covering Kyle Cooper and Derick Minnie and Lubabalo Mtembu bracketed in together. Tian Meyer and Lindeque covering the backline.

Sharks: 15. Riaan Viljoen, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. JP Pietersen, 12. Meyer Bosman, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Pat Lambie, 9. Charl McLeod, 8. Keegan Daniel (Capt), 7. Willem Alberts, 6. Marcell Coetzee, 5. Franco van der Merwe, 4. Anton Bresler, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 2. Kyle Cooper, 1. JC Janse van Rensburg. Substitutes: 16. Monde Hadebe, 17. Wiehahn Herbst, 18. Pieter-Steph du Toit, 19. Derick Minnie / Lubabalo Mtembu, 20. Jean Deysel, 21. Tian Meyer, 22. Piet Lindeque.

  • That selection confirms that Plum needs to be given the boot. PSDT and Herbst on the bench……what a laugh

  • “Why Franco van der Merwe is left in the starting fifteen again, boggles the mind.” Maybe because he is actually the only one who can take a line out ball?

Why not rather ask why KD is playing? That is more mind boggling than anything else.

  • There is nothing in this line up that screams combination or balance! I am sorry but the best squad we presented was against the Chiefs, sure there was a lot of new players but somehow it felt balanced. Sure this team will put 50 against a weak side but it will always struggle, 50/50 win/loss at most. The only combination that has a little experience is the scrumhalf/flyhalf channel and yet we still think we are the IT side, and the poor coaching staff keeps getting hammered(maybe justified), they can only work with what they have they don’t hire the players. And still all these Lions players Hmmm….Any business uses contractors to build their infrastructure but they use their own employees to build their legacy. Add low morale and rumours and you still think this is a championship winning side……We are where we are because we are where we are! No rifts/clicks/xenophobia needed. Come on Mr John Smit up the last hurrah at Saracens we need you.

  • @Bakmister (Comment 9) : I don’t think we’ll put 50 past the Force, unfortunately I think we’ll struggle to get the win, but just get the win.

  • Look, that isnt a bad side and they should beat the force… I hope their attitude switches from wanting not to lose, to believing they should win, and well…

  • @Letgo (Comment 10) : You will always get your larger than live characters, they are bigger, stronger and more skilled but down the pecking order is players that don’t have those qualities but they have heart + bravery and you will barely win anything without that. It is the balance of these two characters that is important the one a team player the other the x-factor. The Bulls are perfect examples but even the Sharks had some squads in the past, or forget the past even now. Bresler, Coetzee, Whitehead, Ludick, Pietersen, Deysel and even Herbst and Du Toit is good examples couple them with the Jordaan, Lambie, Steyn, Mvovo, Reinach, Daniel, Kankowski’s, Du Plessis, Alberts and bobs your uncle. And I bet you even lower on the pecking order or even up and coming there is a lot more on both sides. How you want to play and your realistic goals will determine how many of each you need and where you need them.

  • @Bakmister (Comment 13) : I agree with you on combinations.

I also think that the fact that Plum couldn’t get it right when we had only a couple of injuries, causing the sharks to struggle to put in the type of commanding performances that was expected of them and dropping games they shouldn’t along the way has had a negative effect on the team. It’s hard to get yourself up from here and try to motivate yourself when you’re putting in weak performances week in and week out. Now the combinations might be right – for example I think Coetzee/Alberts/Daniel made a pretty good combination last year, but under completely different circumstances.

When you don’t fix a small thing that’s causing stale performances when they start to show, and just say we’ll take the win no matter how unconvincing, they become bigger problems.

I don’t see us digging ourselves out of this whole, but it would be nice we if can string together a couple of wins. Only problem I have with that is that I don’t want a good end to a season to give anyone the illusion of how good we were, or more specifically our coaching staff were during the season.

  • I honestly would have picked more or less the same team. I would have started Herbst at loose-head. I would have started du Toit ahead of van der Merwe. I also wouldn’t have dropped Lindeque. I reckon he is far better than Ndungane. Other than that, the team looks decent. Then again though, we have looked decent for weeks now but there is just no motivation. Hopefully the fear of going the entire tour winless will spark something within the team.

  • @David12246 (Comment 17) : Yes, Lindeque is having to play out position, bad coaching tactics, play him out position, then drop him for being $hit. Coach must go.

  • Now I don’t often sing Odwa’s praises – but welcome back bru!
The fact that Daniel, Coetzee and Franco get the umpteenth chance to start again is just a bloody joke.
    Go sharks?, I guess. :|

  • @Uli (Comment 18) : best of all is the player that is playing in his position is also being played out of position. 13 playing wing and a wing playing 13 no that makes sense!!!!!!!!!

  • What was the point in flying Danie Minnie over to play 2 min and then not be available for the VC? More dumb admin. Have been supporting the team since the B section days and still always will. However this administration must go. Why do we let our home grown talent leave the province, the ones who have played age group rugby for the Sharks and will die for the jersey only to drop them and import hasbeens who clearly don’t care provided there is a cheque at the end of the month. Just think of how many Natal schooled players there were in the 1990 team (compared to curent team) who showed true grit and pride – that’s the team we remember, not Rudolph’s chums.

  • @snakeslayer (Comment 25) : well said!!!!!!!! was just looking at that side today, hell that was a good side and with Ian Mac as coach they did really well and played for pride and the jersey!!!!!!!!!! Hope the current side can regain some pride in the second halve ofthe comp but with plum as coach I don’t see that happening.

  • Clearly you okes haven’t seen Lindeque defend at 13, he’s a big guy, but really he’s a piss poor defender at 13.

@sam94 (Comment 24) : has Plumtree’s man management written all over it, personally hope Sbura moves on after this season. Things don’t seem to be working out at the Sharks. Think he needs a fresh start at the Kings, Stormers also looking for a replacement for Habana, hope he doesn’t go there though with their non existent attacking game

He was the worst player on the field for us last week by a country mile. Are we gonna play against the force with zero possession again?

  • @King Shark (Comment 30) : exactly, been watching him since his school days, he was damn destructive at Grey Bloem, came to the Sharks and he just became as average a player as you will ever see. Not surprised at all when he didn’t get a contract at the end of last year, very little room for growth there
