Rugby 4 Rhino – You can HELP!

We all know that we are sitting with a huge problem in South Africa regarding Rhino poaching. Mila Loubser, my daughter was chosen as a Miss Summerheat Gauteng finalist recently and was appointed as an official Mission Rhino ambassador. She has chosen the sport we love so much to run a charity event to raise money for this worthy cause, and we have started a Superbru Pool in order to raise funds. Hence the birth of Rugby4Rhino.

Mission Rhino is a non-profit organisation (Registration number 1040-2010) based in South Africa dedicated to preserving both the black and white African Rhino. High Heels 4 Horns is the Summerheat charity which supports Mission Rhino. All Finalist in each province also run a charity event together to raise funds, but Mila wanted to do something extra to try and raise funds.

The majority of African rhino horns are now headed for traditional medicine markets in China and Vietnam. There had been a similar increase in illegal rhino horn movement from Nepal and India during the same time period.

Despite China being a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and banning trade in rhinoceros horn and its derivatives in 1993, current rhino poaching levels suggest that the use of rhino horn continues unabated in traditional medicine markets.

Testing was carried out in 1983 by researchers at Hoffmann-LaRoche, and followed up 25 years later with a study at the Zoological Society of London. Both studies arrived at the same conclusion: rhino horn contains no medicinal properties. The study “found no evidence that rhino horn has any medicinal effect as an antipyretic and would be ineffective in reducing fever, a common usage in much of Asia.” Testing also confirmed that “rhino horn, like fingernails, is made of agglutinated hair” and “has no analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmolytic nor diuretic properties” and “no bactericidal effect could be found against suppuration and intestinal bacteria.” Dr. Arne Schiotz of WWF summed it up: “This proves that rhino horn is of no use to anyone except the original owner. You would get the same effect from chewing your own fingernails.”

The total Rhino’s poached thus far and untill friday was 326 since 1 January 2013 and to a staggering 1897 since January 2009!

Please can we ask you to support Mila’s charity drive and to try and make a difference by joining her Superbru Pool. We ask for a minimum donation of R30 per player, but you are welcome to make a larger donation if you wish! Thank you so much for the people who has joined and donated already!

  • The problem is to change the believe of the people. Rhino horns will be in demand as long as the people believes it will “heal” them. I believe the problem can only be fixed by teaching the children of these countries that rhino horns are only usefull to rhinos. Good luck with the project all help is needed to stop the poaching!!

  • @JD (Comment 2) : I agree totally but in the meanwhile something has to be done to limit the damage, Ek sidder om te dink wat die skade sou wees as daar nie ingetree was nie.

  • @Uli (Comment 1) : I feel for the smaller and private game reserves not only are they loosing a battle against the poachers but they are loosing a lot of money as well.

  • At the moment the biggest problem is in KrugerPark. They have about 6 confrontations a day! A drone to patrol cost about R75K. We have just gotten some bullet proof vests as well for these guys, literally living in the bush to try and find the poachers!

It seems that the horn treatment is the best deterrent at present – it costs in the region of R8K to treat one rhino and it last about 4 yrs.

  • I’ve also learned some interesting things. The numbers are not actually factual, as a lot of these rhino’s poached are pregnant. So it is in fact more!

Also, and I speak under correction, the black rhino can only mate if both male and female are in heat, so to speak. And if they mate its not a given that she will conceive. So to try growing numbers in captivity is extremely difficult. We are in the negative at the moment…so more rhino’s die than those born!

  • The problem is. Since rhino horn trading was made illegal, the numbers has rised – as u can see in the graph. And that means that u have local people involved in the poaching. The likes of vets etc. In the end its all about greed.

  • @Ice (Comment 7) : The people who are dying the rhino horns are also using locals to help them. They use the locals in the hope that the bush telegraph sends across the message that any rhino with a dyed horn is toxic and they will not be able to sell that horn because the end user will not want to use pink / red rhino horn and there are toxins in it as well. http://www.rhinorescueproject.com/

  • @lostfish (Comment 8) : what’s nice about this whole charity run of Mila is that she has a say in where the money goes – not necessarily just to Mission Rhino and they decide – she can eg ask them to donate to the rescue project!

  • 3 more rhino’s poached in KZN over the weekend. So sad.

    http://www.looklocal.co.za/looklocal/content/en/newcastle/newcastle-news-general?oid=7472101&sn=Detail&pid=4596133&3-more-rhinos-butchered-in-Northern-KZN

No use catching the poachers because there will always be somebody willing to risk their lives for the money that they are getting paid. Somehow the kingpins need to be caught. How can the ‘users’ be so bloody stupid though? In this modern world you’d think that people in the biggest economy in the world would realise that this shit doesn’t work.

  • The only way to stop it is to flood the Chinese market with poisoned rhino horn powder. Kill the bastards who are creating the demand.
