Sharks bolstered for Bulls clash

The good news from a Sharks point of view is that neither hooker Bismarck du Plessis, nor flyhalf butch James, appear to have suffered any further setbacks during their rehabilitation from respective knee injuries and are on track to make a comeback to competitive rugby this weekend, as we reported earlier.

Coach John Plumtree can thus look to include both in his squad for Saturday’s clash against the Bulls at Kings Park, the Sharks’ last hurdle before enjoying a month-long break, during which period the vast majority of their other injured stars should become available. The Durban side’s second bye comes up after this weekend, following which there’s a mandatory 3-week break for all teams to accommodate the June International season. Several Sharks players will, of course, be inaction for the Boks during this period as they face Italy, Scotland and Samoa in a new quadrangular tournament.

Also available for selection, should the coach opt to use him, will be Bok eighthman Ryan Kankowski, but only time will tell whether Kanko has done enough during his 5-week “break” to change th coach’s perception of his readiness to play at Super Rugby level.

The Sharks unfortunately appear to have two fresh injury concerns, with JP Pietersen and Meyer Bosman battling groin and facial injuries respectively. We await further information on the pair’s prognosis.

  • Damn good news, seeing as we’ve run out of centers! Play Kanko at 12!

  • This is ridiculous. The season is over in terms of chasing the title; Plumtree has said as much. Use the rest of the season to blood youngsters! Fred Zeilinga has dominated the u21 Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup for years. Why are we not using him to give Lambie a break; he’s surely going to be our Currie Cup 10 when Lambie is on international duty. Just a bit of common sense for a change, jeez

  • Our season may be over, but don’t be silly to use players that did not even play Currie Cup before, in the Super 15. Do you want to play religation game at the end. We must still win the last games.

  • Having Bissie and Butch back will bring more options for selection for sure, but don’t see them starting the game though. Hope Butch doesn’t play for a yellow card when he gets on lol..

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 4) : while I hear you, it seems there are certain players who are just NEVER going to get a game while Plumtree is coach.

I won’t name all of them, but I’m afraid Williams is one.

What about Robert du Preez, or Pieter Muller?

  • With all the injuries this season, the Sharks management will have to have a serious look into the “supplements” being given/used to/by the players.

This many injuries in a single season is not normal. I suspect there’s much more to this than meets the eye.

@FireTheLooser (Comment 37) : Unless its steroids or growth hormones ,not much to write home about. The conditioning of these guys has always been good -and I know more than a few people involved in those circles. It’s just an unfortunate year in terms of injuries. One should rather speculate whether our game plan is to blame ? Could be the case considering the turnabout in play when our players breached the advantage line…
