End of the road for Bekker?

The Stormers’ season goes from bad to worse as injuries strike.

The unfortunate thing is that the injuries do not only cripple the Stormers but also the Springboks in the upcoming June Internationals.

Springboks Juan de Jongh and Andries Bekker will both miss Saturday’s match against the Reds at Newlands, their first home game after a tough tour. The front row also takes a heavy knock as both Frans Malherbe and Pat Cilliers are also ruled out, along with hooker-cum-flank Deon Fourie.

Bekker’s injury, a grade one tear in the disc between his vertebra, rules him out for six to eight weeks, which rules him out for the Springboks and could also spell the end of his career with the Stormers.

Juan de Jongh also looks set to miss a few weeks of action, a fracture of his ring finger keeping him on the sidelines. De Jongh might miss the first Springbok match of the year, his return expected in the middle of the International break.

Fourie has fractured ribs, ruling him out for two to three weeks as well, while Cilliers and Malherbe both have ankle injuries. Malherbe’s seems more serious, undergoing surgery to correct and missing at least ten weeks. Cilliers’ isn’t that much better, ruled out for about six weeks, but also the end of his Super Rugby season.

While Scarra Ntubeni hurt his hamstring ahead of the Rebels match last weekend, Tiaan Liebenberg trained with the squad this week and is set to tackle the Reds. Ntubeni will miss this weekend’s match as well, his hamstring needing two weeks to recover.

  • So do we play Juandre Kruger, who has been pretty anonymous this season, in his place, or give PSdT a chance?

I would say Etzebeth and PSdT could just become a brutal combo for SA and since Bekker is injured anyway this would be a pretty good chance to give them a shot.

  • I can’t help but think how the S15 seaon would have turned out if the Sharks and stormers didn’t have so many injuries. With the sharks, stormers, bulls ans cheetahs playing good rugby we could have had 3 to 4 teams in the top 6. And thus bringing the trophy back to SA. Would have, should have, could have?……..

  • The Boks are facing some pretty average teams in the June window, so it is a good time to start pairing Eben and Pieter-Steph. The only player I really hope gets called up by the Boks is Herbst. Jannie will start at tighthead, but there is no other better no3 in SA than Wiehan at the moment.

  • No matter what, this current rugby system/format is not sustainable.

With the number of games lost by the Sharks and Streamers thus far, they might as well have played their vodacom cup side for the first half of SR and still probably have ended up in a similar log position, but with far less injuries.

Something radical has to be done, and don’t expect the fat cats at SANZAR and IRB to do anything. The franchises will have to take matters into their own hands.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 9) : Yes please, Herbst has really come of age. He used to be pretty average (given he is still very young), but I do believe he is the future of SA at th.

  • Has there been one year in Bekker’s career when he didn’t break down?

  • I may be harping on the same old story but the fact that SA sides are away for 4 weeks at a time is detrimental to us and skewed in favour of the NZ and Oz sides. No matter how you slice it, we travel for 4 weeks and they only travel for 2. How is that fair?
