Dear John

The prodigal son returns to the Shark Tank, albeit in a new role altogether. He is seen as the saviour of what is fast becoming one of the worst Sharks teams in recent history.

John Smit will start his second-in-command stint in a months time, shadowing Brian van Zyl until he retires at the end of the financial year, 28 February 2014. Smit will then take the hot seat, and it will be an interesting period in the Sharks’ rugby history.

The question on everybody’s mind is – What will Smit do with the current coaching staff?

John Plumtree and co have been in charge of one of the best Sharks squads available, ever, and have come up with a few Currie Cup victories, and a few lost finals to show for their hard work. Yes, no other South Africa team has achieved three consecutive finals in a matter of a year, but they also couldn’t manage a win in one of those.

To Plumtree and co’s defence, the Sharks have been brutally hit by injuries, some players, after 15 rounds of Super Rugby, are yet to even return from previous injuries. That, along with the injuries sustained throughout the season, has prevented Plumtree and co to select the best possible fifteen, instead opting for the fit fifteen.

Where Plumtree and co are failing though, is with his supreme lack of man management. There have been a few instances in recent months, the Ryan Kankowski issue the biggest of the lot. While a team is struggling with severe injuries, surely a player of Kankowski’s experience, whether in or out of form, should form part of the squad. Whatever happened to cause this unrest, we are sure to not know the details of, but it is the handling of the incident that has caused unrest. Unrest not only amongst supporters calling for Kankowski’s inclusion, but among players who might fear they are next to be omitted.

All in all, a poor scorecard after half of the year’s rugby, and possibly something for CEO Smit to sort out upon taking the reins. That being said, it would not be my first point on John’s To Do list.

My first point of call for the CEO, and although it is beyond his duties, would be to somehow influence the decision for a new captain.

No matter the coach, if your captain clearly does not understand the rules of the game that he is playing at the highest level, he cannot lead by example. If leading by example is something Keegan Daniel aspires to, we can all go on our knees and say thank you that the other have not followed. The Sharks can have all the specialist coaches in the world, but if your captain plays like Keegan has been these last five or so weeks, it is little wonder that the Sharks are where they are on the log.

So whether it is in his job description or not, CEO Smit will do a lot of good to Sharks rugby if he can appoint an actual captain.

  • Sharks have lost all the 3 finals keegan has been captain and i can’t remember the amount of games Keegan has given away penalties that end up costing us the win…Keegan has always been a “loskop” player…made no sense to make him captain in the first place. He’s has truthfully been soo poor as a player that i can’t believe how he is still in the match 22, let alone the captain of the team.

Also have no idea how Mcloed keeps getting a contract renewal all the time…he has cost us just as much the past 2-3 seasons…i can’t imagine what his error stats look like!

  • First and foremost for Smit – review ALL contracts.

Time for a genuine shake-up at the sharks, from top to bottom, from bottom to top.

When Steve Jobs returned to apple, he took control quickly by making sure that the personnel on staff knew why they were there and what was expected of them. If they didn’t, they were fired on the spot.

Time for that old rust bucket of a Sharks team to have itself an overhaul.

Bosman did the team a huge favour by actually being in the field, irrespective of his broken nose – which would usually result in 4 weeks off.

We have no other players – and before the broken nose, Bosman was one of the better backs in the team.

  • Jeez although I called this season it still hurts watching each match. You can have all aggression and enthusiasm to win a game but if you lack the basic skills of the game you will more often than not end up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. The Bulls litterly toyed with us they just had the patience to wait for us to self implode, they did not looked worried for one second no matter how hard they were cleaned/tackled/ran at.

Regarding Keegan I will always have a soft spot for him but you don’t control a player of his calibre by making him captain, he is the type of player you unleash on the opposition one of your trump card he will either win it for you or loose it.

Major problems: Backrow unbalanced and playing two distributing players at first and second five, you will always go side to side because no one is straightening. This means if your runner is a forward he will bash it up and if it is a back he will pass so easy to defend against, both Lambie and Bosman is about as heavy as a sack of potatoes and with the power of a Chery QQ. Whoever reads the game the best should play fly but don’t play both next to each other. And what happen to playing what is in front of you and with vision…….Sies ek skaam my dood ons is die swakste span wat dit aanbetref.

I also believe it might go even worse in 2014, depending on:

A: Coaching new/retain we might loose a handful of players depending on this decision and that is either way.
B: How the CC is approached. Are they going in to win it!! Or are they going in for development on the way we play, coach, manage and of coarse blooding new players so that you approach this competition like there is nothing to win, no silverware it is just a bunch of games.

I don’t think it is a case of ‘giving’ the coach that (they had Tim Goodenough in the days of Muir when they hosted 2007 final and Plum got rid of him first thing when he took over), coach must want that and I don’t think Plum cares much for fancy ‘kopdokters’ and ‘out-of-the-box’ thinkers.

  • Good people, let’s not lose focus here. Plum had the best players in country over a period of 5 years and didn’t deliver a Superugby title. The guys in week 15 played like a team with a purpose, only in week 15 did they show line speed and urgency. There are possibilities for this, Plum can’t get the best out of the players, the players don’t want to play for him or Plum is not coaching and preparing the team properly. There is one common denominator here, John Plumtree and that is why he has to bow out. Let him coach the u19′s if he’s loved so much by the board. Just do us a favour John, no Sharks\ANC deployment here, we want a proper coach.

The relationship with its host city is top priority for a professional sports team and the stadium issue will start to fester if it is not resolved soon.

Your post should settle many fears that some may have but I just cant help feeling that Smittie may easily become a puppet at the hands of some very astute businessmen….nah, that could never happen, not to our national hero who was still playing rugby last week.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 58) : Not such a bad thing necessarily for the businessmen to have more say in the running. A successful team translates into more bums on stadium seats, more fan interest – so in their interest too to build a winning culture.

Good businessmen will not try and micro-manage rugby matters but at the same time ask the tough questions that need to be asked.
