Ebersohn gets the call

Cheetahs centre Robert Ebersohn has been called up to the Springbok squad. He is there as a result of injuries to Jean de Villiers, JJ Engelbrecht and Juan de Jongh. Ebersohn joins the Springbok squad this morning.

Even though he joins the squad, it is only precautionary and his involvement will be limited to covering any injuries to the midfield, should said injured players not recover.

De Villiers picked up a hamstring strain in the Stormers win over the Kings on the weekend. JJ Engelbrecht to a knock to his quad and de Jongh has been out for a while with a fractured finger. None of these players trained on Monday.

Joining the above spectators was Pierre Spies, who has a tight groin, Francois Louw, who has a quad strain and Pieter-Steph du Toit, who has a sternum problem.

At this stage the only fit centre is Jan Serfontein, who is in line to make his Springbok debut. If there was any doubt about his position in the squad, the injuries have certainly cleared that up.

With Jean de Villiers doubtful, Heyneke Meyer’s next problem becomes selecting a captain. He mentioned that a few players are available to lead the team. Adriaan Strauss, being vice-captain, jumps to mind, but there are two more names to be thrown in the hat.

Pierre Spies has led his Bulls team with great effect while Francois Louw has been the captain of Bath, so it really is a three horse race.

  • It must be Strauss for captain.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 1) : I agree, however, Strauss almost certainly won’t be our vc going forward, so you might have to go with the more likely regular starter in Spies or Louw (preferably the latter as he has more of a hold on his jersey).

  • Not Louw as he is not based in SA. Could go completely left field and choose Beast?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : @PTAShark (Comment 3) : I kinda agree with PTAShark. The captain should at least attend all the training sessions and none of the overseas based players attended any of the camps.

    I agree..

But he is no way going to be a long term captain, he is just an interim captain?

If he is an experienced captain for Bath, surely the Boks could use that?

  • @Ludz (Comment 11) : Bismarck has obviously been injured for far too long, and thus you have completely forgotten what he’s capable of doing on the rugby field.

I am expecting to see a different Bismarck now that Strauss is his main competition, our boy Bismarck don’t take too kindly to those staking a claim on HIS jersey. ;)

    I pity the opposition.

  • The simple fact is that Bismarck in top form may be the best forward in the world, let alone best hooker or best hooker in the country. He is capable of athleticism Strauss would only otherwise see on youtube. His game plan is also second to none in terms of carrying and his breakdown prowess. How fickle us South Africans are…

  • People from the Cape are generally really nice people ,that is until they start talking about Rugby and the Stormers…then you start to notice that they are wearing skinny jeans ,a vintage scarf, v-neck loose fit shirts and those glasses with the lenses punched out; then they start saying stuff like Deon Fourie should be the Springbok number 6 or 2.

  • Strauss remains a better option to start and captain the Boks. Heyneke has said before that rather than pick the best player, pick the right player. Strauss is playing the best rugby of his career and presently is head and shoulders above any other hooker in world rugby gentleman. He’s probably the best leader in SA as well.

Nothing against Bissie, but Strauss as a hooker in his form and a leader of a team far outweights having an on form Bismarck as a starter. Sharks shades off for a sec

  • I would just like to know when Strauss has ever outplayed Bismarck as comprehensively as Bismarck outplayed Strauss when last they met. Struass ,to his credit improved during the game, but there is an uneven ditch imprinted in Vodacom Park that perfectly matches Strauss’s back and arse.

  • Let’s see what happens, but if Heyneke has the team’s best interests, he’ll retain Strauss as a starter for the rest of this season and I believe as from next year should hand over the captaincy armband to Strauss.

Freddy was also damn good on that day.
