Sharks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit has been withdrawn from the Springbok squad on medical advice.

The 20-year-old is suffering from a sternum injury and according to the Bok medical staff, the best option in terms of his long-term playing career is to undergo surgery to correct the problem. That will put him out of action for three months, thus all-but killing off his dream of representing the Boks in the upcoming Test Series and the Rugby Championship.

Franco van der Merwe has been called into the Bok squad as a replacement.

  • sounds like he’s been carrying this injury for a while. If this is the case why the hell has Plum been playing him? My guess is to keep his job….

Why did the previous Sharks doctor leave so abruptly? Was it because player were being played to breaking point and against doctor’s orders? Too much coincidence for my liking.

Credit to the Bok medical staff for putting the player first.

  • @Greg (Comment 21) : Geez Greg, how naive can you be, it has to be the Sharks medicos that are to blame…Im sure it was apparent for all to see that he has been carrying the injury from the first game of the season and that there is no way that he could have picked up the injury in the Bulls game (where he was clearly shirking his duties).

    Yeah right

  • I know I am beating the same drum that I have been beating all season but here goes:

As long as our gameplan is to have one guy bash into a bunch of other guys, our players will be struggling with frequent injuries. Blame Plum, nobody else.

Want to make a wager on Marcel and Kyle’s probability of making it unscathed to the Currie Cup?

No doubt Plum is a nice guy and upstanding fellow, but his coaching has left much to be desired. Someone mentioned making him director of rugby, maybe he’s built for that type of position instead on dealing with the players directly.
