The Springbok team to play Italy this Saturday has been announced, with 5 players making their debut in the match. Willie le Roux and Jano Vermaak will wear the Green and Gold for the first time as starters.

Trevor Nyakane, Arno Botha and Jan Serfontein are set to get their debuts off the bench.

As expected, the team has a certain light blue tinge to it, with seven of the fifteen starting players from the Pretoria based union.

Jean de Villiers has recovered in time to lead the team, joining JJ Engelbrecht in the midfield. The Bulls halfback combination is a clear indication of what type of game the Springboks are expected to play.

Adriaan Strauss splits the Sharks front rowers in Tendai Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis. With the news that Pieter-Steph du Toit is out injured, Eben Etzebeth and Juandre Kruger lock down in the second row. Francois Louw, Willem Alberts and Pierre Spies combine to form the anticipated loose trio.

Springboks: 1.Tendai Mtawarira, 2. Adriaan Strauss, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 5. Juandre Kruger, 6. Francois Louw, 7. Willem Alberts, 8. Pierre Spies, 9. Jano Vermaak, 10, Morne Steyn, 11. Bjorn Basson, 12. Jean de Villiers (Capt), 13. JJ Engelbrecht, 14. Bryan Habana, 15. Willie le Roux.
Substitutes: 16. Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17. Trevor Nyakane, 18. Coenie Oosthuizen, 19. Flip van der Merwe, 20. Arno Botha, 21. Ruan Pienaar, 22. Pat Lambie, 23. Jan Serfontein.

  • Much as expected then although I must admit I never thought Willie le Roux will start for the Boks under HM.

  • oh well not an unexpected squad, but the Bulls players are smiling for sure. Seems like if you play for the bulls you have a very good shot at being a bok!!!! Why Bjorn Basson is there baffles the Mind. And as for Vermaak he is the SECOND string Bull but Starting bok ???? Sarel Pretorius must be Applying for an Australian Visa as we Speak.

I don’t for a second actually believe that the Sharks boys should all be Starting but guys like Brussouw/Herbst/Joe Peterson should be there. We will easily beat Italy to silence Meyers Critics but the AB and Kangaroos will be waiting with knifes out knowing we are ripe for the Picking.

  • If you have Bjorn, Vermaak and Stain it means this will be typical brain dead rugby. So Willie will be in the same boat as Keegan was last year.

Don’t expect to see much of anything from Willie, and if he does play his natural game, don’t expect to see him back.

  • @garethkorb (Comment 5) : Sarel Pretorius can’t kick and he doesn’t tackle…..Vermaak is better than Hougaard and Piet van Zyl is better than Sarel.

Right choice by Heyneke IMO although I would have liked Piet van Zyl to get a look in too.

  • @garethkorb (Comment 5) : Vermaak started most matches this year for the Bulls and for the rest seemed the better halfback of the two. Sarel Pretorius is also “second” string at Cheetahs as he has defensive issues.

I like the side, especially the fact that Kirchner is not there. Doubt you’d find a Bulls fan wanting him there. Wing with Basson is bit shaky, but let’s see.

  • I’ll give HM the benefit of the doubt on all other selections in the current squad simply because he’s starting with Willie le Roux at the back and there’s no Kirchner on the bench. Vermaak’s start is also pretty exciting. Hopefully he breaks out of the Fourie du Preez mould that Pienaar and Hougaard are trying so hard to emulate.

  • South African rugby is in a bad cycle this year, reminds me 2003. Thankfully this year’s lack of flavour is due to injuries and not due to a lack of talented players.

We are however a bit thin at 9, lots of quality youngsters coming through but they lack experience and finesse. Jano is getting a bit long in the tooth. (he’s what 29 this year?)

b.Is Louw as good an all round open-side as Brussow? Wait I thought Meyer didn’t want a fetch (translation I dont want a small forward).

c.That backline is set up to do 2 things 1.Chase up and unders 2.Crash ball in the midfield and set up 2nd phase -how will Le Roux fit in with these plans?

  • What irks me is how condescending he is about the unions. Watching the Boots n All interview he mentioned how he had been to all the unions and  helped them  LOOK AT WHAT HE’S DONE TO THE STORMERS AND SHARKS!!!

He says he’s worked heavily on the breakdown and on defense, neither I would say the Bulls have ever been particularly clinical at, they’ve perhaps been more abrasive there but that doesn’t translate to efficiency. He’s still stuck in the beta version of today’s Rugby.

  • I’m not a big HM fan, but I think Willie Le Roux will be fine in the team. Remember that HM used to always play at least one player in his backline with a bit of flair. Remember Ettiene Botha in his early 2000′s team, then later a young Habana.

  • Not too fussed. Regarding the Boks as autonomous and apart from the Super Rugby scene the forward’s line-up is pretty similar to one that ended off last year. The backline is quite similar aside from Willie Le Roux and Jano. HM just added a few youngsters to the bench.

With all injuries these days it won’t take long for our favourite players to get a shot.

Basson hasn’t been very great, but then we always have to go back and consider what style of play the coach will demand and who will suite that style of play best.

It’s Italy, so anyone should look good.

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 49) : How does Jan Serfontein make it over Ebersohn? Ebersohn has excelled in an often dim Cheetahs team(in past years)and Jan Serfontein has only just become a regular in the team -playing less than a handful of games? To me there are still concerns over his passing game ,he is a little crashball merchant in the making, irrespective of what Hugh Bladen and Joel Stransky have to say…

  • This may be one of the best Italian sides we have faced. Their forward pack has some real talent in it and around that talent are some honest ,hardworking and experienced forwards.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we are caught slightly complacent and get a fright. If that happens you can expect Willie Le Roux to be the scapegoat and take the blame

  • I was going to get cross about the selection of Morne Steyn, but since Meyer has said he wants to use both flyhalves, I’m alright. The news about du Toit sucks, I would have started Mvovo, I think it’s time to put du Plessis on the bench (I could be wrong), and lastly I think we need a proper tight-head on the bench, Coenies tight-head scrumming is not test worthy in the slightest.
