Jonny Wilkinson has ended all speculation that he will be joining up with the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia, undergoing a groin operation.

Wilkinson was tipped to come into the squad at a later stage, being the in-form European flyhalf, taking Toulon to European Cup glory.

Wilkinson told ESPN that he had to undergo a groin operation to ready him for another tough season. He had gotten to a point where he could not train as a result of the injury, just going from match to match. If that is the form you get for not training, I’d hate to see what he will show us when he is 100% fit.

Wilkinson went on to say that the European season is 48 weeks long and that he is looking forward to enjoying the four weeks off before starting it all over again.

  • It’s a pity so many top players are playing in foreign countries, and the same thing is starting to happen to our South African players aswell. It’s a bonus for players in smaller countries like Italy and Argentina to play over seas to keep up with the bigger playing countries, but in the end its all about the moola.

Dont know when you’ll see that, or if its ever happened.

Obviously a prodigiously talented stand-off, but so, so injury-prone.

I cant help thinking that if he’d been better managed in the early stages of his career, whether he would be an absolute legend today.
