According to the very reliable Jean Smyth , Western Province and Stormers fullback  Joe Pieterson has penned a deal with French Top 14 side Biarritz.

Joe Pieterson , or Klein Percy  has spent some time playing France before, he signed with Bayonne in 2010 before returning to the Cape in November 2011, he once stated that it was so cold in France that he had thought of playing with a cut off wet suit under his rugby gear.

Originally a flyhalf, Pietersons major claim to fame was at fullback where a massive heart and an accurate boot won him much favour with the Newlands faithful.

At 29 years of age its a smart move for the player and a blessing in disguise for the Cape side as it opens the door for young Cheslyn Kolbe to be awarded with game time for the senior side, Kolbe is currently in France with the Junior Springboks and is doing his stocks no harm with his performances thus far, literally sidestepping his name into rugby discussions. Its not yet known when exactly Pieterson will depart but it will most likely be following the Currie Cup  season which should allow WP an easy transition period.

  • Joe, Zane Kircher, Wynand Olivier, Meyer Bosman – at this rate we will end up being left with decent backline players only…

  • Isn’t Taute on a loan deal? Till when? WP would be making a mistake not banking on Kolbe

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : I think his asking price took a dive this year – did not do much in the few games he played.
