Jean doubtful for Samoa

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer will have his hand forced in terms of changes for the test against Samoa this weekend.

The most worrying injury is to Jean de Villiers who seems set to miss the match. This would require not only a midfield shuffle but also a change in captaincy. De Villiers has a sternoclavicular joint and second rib injury.

Coach Meyer has said that no player will be played if they are not 100% fit to play, which might rule out de Villiers. One of two players look set to take de Villiers’ place, Juan de Jongh being fit again to play and Robert Ebersohn being the other centre in the squad. The captaincy will in all likelihood fall to Adriaan Strauss, which would mean another stint off the bench for Bismarck du Plessis.

The Springboks have already lost the services of Arno Botha, for which no replacement has been called up. Other concerns at this stage are Pierre Spies and Jannie du Plessis, who both have cuts to the face, and Eben Etzebeth who complained of discomfort in his AC joint. Willem Alberts is also still struggling with a side strain. None of these players took part in training on Monday.

Alberts is expected to return to the team for this weekend’s match, whether it be in the starting team or on the bench.

  • I think Lappies should start ahead of Alberts. Lappies will be more matchfit. Also can someone please make sure Spies’s cut doesn’t heal. He truly is a passenger in the team. Made no impact whatsoever.

  • Meyer is a little short of options at 8, isn’t he?

He can play my grandmother at 8 and she’ll be more effective than Spies.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 2) : Agree on Lappies. Based on current form and fitness Alberts shouldn’t even be in the squad. The less said about Spies the better.

I hope Ebersohn gets the nod at 12.

  • I am sorry but JdV is holding back our Springbok team. The sooner HM leaves him out, the better for the future of our team.

  • @Uli (Comment 6) : Ok that point is true, but then the captain needs to be chosen. Whom in the matchday 15 would you select? Strauss when bissie will become first choice? Spies when he doesnt deserve to be there? Flo or habana or steyn all of whom will now be based overseas. We are stuck until a leader emerges.

  • @Dunx (Comment 8) : I know that, we are sitting with the same problem at the Sharks, who will be captain? KD just doesn’t deserve his place in the team.

I think its time we have some young captains come through the system.
