Jano Vermaak and Dewald Potgieter have both been confirmed as departures from the Bulls after the completion of the Super Rugby season.

Potgieter’s contract is up at the end of the Super Rugby season and has decided to further his career in Japan. It is still to be confirmed what Potgieter will do once the Japanese league finishes, which would allow him to return to Super Rugby, should he so wish.

Vermaak has requested an early release from his contract to move to France, joining up with Toulouse. Even though Vermaak recently made his Springbok debut, it is said that this deal was done before his Springbok call up, and that he had already made up his mind to move.

While two stalwarts leave, the Bulls have managed to secure the services of numerous youngsters. Springbok stars JJ Engelbrecht and recent debutant Arno Botha have extended their contracts, while Louis Fouche, Jono Ross, Basil Short, Deon Stegmann and Hencus van Wyk have extended their current contract to 2015. Handre Pollard was another signing mentioned, the highly rated flyhalf signing on until 2017!

  • wow…. anyone keeping count?

Chiliboy, Kruger, Steenkamp, Potgieter, Potgieter, Vermaak, Steyn, Olivier, Kirchner

The only thing they’re not losing is props, which is a pity for them.

  • What still amazes me is how well they are able to recover and fill the gaps left behind. They do have a working system. Something I hope that John Smit and Brendan Venter will get working for the Sharks in the near future.

  • The only short term problem I see for them is at flyhalf.

Fouche is nothing special, while Pollard’s form during the Junior Champs leave much to the imagination.

Are they looking at someone else in the short term?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : It will be interesting to see what they do there. Not sure if Pollard is up to super rugby yet. Maybe they can bring back Derick Hougaard out of retirement

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : they’ll back Fouche. I don’t rate him either, but they seem to.

They also have our “cast off” Willie du Plessis who is playing amazing rugby for Tuks. He’s better than Fouche, in my book and probably better than Pollard too at the moment.

  • Does anyone know what the reason for this exodus is? Surely the bulls are successful enough for players to stay? I mean look at their trophy cabinet…

  • @R Hayward (Comment 7) : it’s money. Brenden Nel highlighted this a few months back but was asked to shut up by the BBRU.

They have contracted so many juniors that they can’t afford to pay their seniors any more.

Just about all the guys that have left were offered less money on renewal.

  • Has Piet Lindeque gone back to them yet? I read a story by Brendon Nel that because of the financial constraints of the BBRU, they were offering contracts at half their current ones to senior players. No wonder they are losing players for higher contract payouts.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Jis Rob I am Stressing now about PSDT I heard the Bulls are after Piet in a serious way. Ungerrer(who I didn’t know of at the time was also mentioned to me) and PSTD and are willing to pay good cash for them. I heard from the same source about Vermaak, Ludik, Potgieter and Brussow, and all are close or confirmed. Also young freestate HOOKERS who’s names I cant recall now have signed with the Bulls.

I dont belief PSTD will leave the Sharks but I will freak the F…out if we loose Du Toit after letting so many youngsters go to accommodate him. I hope we Get the Du Preez’s live up to senior expectations, we need them to come successfully through the system.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : SAD to say I think Tim Swiel and Sam Lane both a bit in Rugby limbo at the moment due to injury concerns(and Big heads) after school have the Goods to become very Great senior players. Lane is a very good 10 but I have always felt his best position is 12(Tim Horn attributes) and Swiel is just a magician Cover for LAMBIE at 10, has the speed for 13 and 15. very good 15 just needs to be backed as soon as possible. Mark my Words Swiel if not given a chance will play for England one day(he will bugger off) and Lane after a season or 2 in senoir rugby will play for Aus…both can have good carriers in Shark and Bok Colors.

  • Really sad news about Vermaak he was a true asset this year for the Bulls.

With Arno Botha’s injury I would have thought they would try to counter any other offer.

  • Sad tale of modern Rugby. make a name playing superugby and go eran the euros preparing your retirement package. Rugby has become like soccer, soon provincialism as we know it, will be something of the past

  • Hmmm losing JC is bad but don’t think HM would have picked him. That said there’s lots of good loosehead props in SA and I think only the Lions will miss him.
