Priority number 1 for Smit: Keep Pieter-Steph

Not to be alarmist, or anything, but SuperSport’s Brenden Nel has this morning lifted the lid on a situation that has been bubbling under for a while now, unbeknownst to most. Possibly the most exciting young talent in South African rugby at the moment, lock Pieter-Steph du Toit, comes out of contract at the end of October and come 1 July this year will effectively be “up for grabs” on the market.

From a Sharks point of view, perhaps the most alarming thing is that this raw youngster who has been thrust onto the big rugby stage very early in his career, has not yet opted to accept the renewal in front of him. A lot has been said about John Plumtree has his “reticence” to back young players, but to Plum’s credit, when a guy as phenomenally gifted as young Steph came along, the coach backed him – and backed him to hilt. One would, perhaps, assume that there would be some loyalty to the team that gave him his break and that a contract renewal in Durban would be a foregone conclusion.

That view is, unfortunately, naive. Rugby is a big-money game these days and given his exploits over the last two years, coupled with some glowing praise from the Bok coach, Pieter-Steph is a big money-player, despite his age. SARU’s rules on contract negotiations, while widely ignored, are nevertheless clear and it is thus prohibited for any union other than the Sharks to put anything in front of Steph before that 1 July deadline. Whilst I’m sure much has already been informally agreed as to the sort of contract that might be attractive, right now, the only offer that du Toit is allowed to know about is the Sharks’ one. That fact, coupled with the loss of the coach who backed him, must surely be reason enough for the player to wait just a little while to see what other options are out there.

Nel mentioned the Bulls and WP are in the running for the player and given the former’s close links to at least one of those unions, you can be sure that Pretoria is prepared to throw a sizable chunk of cash – no doubt coupled with all sorts of assured selection clauses, at du Toit the moment dawn breaks on the first. Province will, I’m sure, do the same and will throw in the extra carrot of establishing a provincial partnership with Eben Etzebeth. That Etzebeth-du Toit partnership is the one, of course, that’s expected to become the next Matfield-Botha pairing for the Boks.

What the Sharks have that neither WP or the Bulls do, though, is John Smit. Together with Brenden Venter, who knows Pieter-Steph from last year’s SA Under 20 campaign, Smit is just the right man to sit down with the youngster, explain his role going forward, alleviate any concerns he may have relating to changes at the Sharks and ultimately convince him that the Sharks’ offer is the right one for him. I have all faith that this is exactly what will happen and that with Smit and Vetner to guide him, Pieter-Steph du Toit will shortly put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him in Sharks colours, hopefully for many years to come. He is out brightest young star and we simply MUST do what it takes to keep him on-board.

Over to you, John.

Du Toit and Bresler should be our locks for next year! We need them.

  • @grant10 (Comment 2) : There are deals on the table, of course.

Same situation for both of them, though. They need to wait until 1 July to see what the Bulls and WP will offer them.

The Sharks do need to make some decisions at some point, though. While the duPs are phenomenal players, so are Wiehahn Herbst and Kyle Cooper and the latter pair come with a far more agreeable price tag.

Streamers is a retirement village for players wanting the easy life, and the Bulls only sign players 20 and younger.

  • If Du Toit opts to leave there should be no sour grapes. The thing about Rugby in SA is that there is an abundance of talent even outside the structures of craven week/sa schools/sa u20. We need to have the confidence that the Sharks union will find that player and develop him better than either WP or the Bulls could then develop Du Toit.

  • I don’t think this is panic stations just yet. A lot of these players are being led by industry savvy (I use this term loosely) agents hell bent on getting the best deal for themselves, oops i mean player. So with all the changes at the Tank going on they will be utilizing this as an excuse. The 2+3 brothers will resign and I think PsdT will renew as he is almost guaranteed a starting line up position (my view anyway). Lets just hope I am right and we don’t waste good talent by shipping them up country.

Also I would consider looking at than I would look at Kriel from the Bulls to play 14 with Kholbe and APLON at the back(eina). Swiel in my opinion has more to offer at 10 than Pollard. Also heard Pienaar on the Stormers list…Ruan that is. with Jean and Co…might become a very good team. I however dont really think Kolbe is more than a good sevens player, where Kriel is a Future Bok. I rate Like Kholbe and hopes he proves me wrong. Johnny Kotze Future Stormers 12 or 13…

  • Salmo, help me with your clue? Who was the SA bowler? And the Jack Hammer one went right over my head too.

A guy I was at school with played with Piet… Jonathan Martin. I know his wife is Asian, though.

  • People, re the players and contracts or that they will just leave???

I am of the opinion the Smit will calm the situation as he is all for the players,

When all became public as to his appointment he said a few things which makes me believe that he had discussions with the players before he made his decisions, this means he would have made sure that these players were ok with what was coming.

He spoke of getting things to move forward, not backwards or the same.

I was hoping for a Ackermann or Matfield to maybe be coach, and if like Rob says it will be a no name brand coach? my thoughts went to R Du Preez senior as he has lots of success with rovers.

But a name that comes up with me is the ex Matie coach, that recently went to the UK, as I know it he also is a friend of Venter, Chean Roux ring a bell??

I think they should go big(Is Graham Henry with the Argies still?)or go home(Everitt ;who has had some promising players come through him looking well drilled)

  • His appointment would probably mean that Brendan Venter will be very hands on, and our school coach will be like a senior assistant coach of sorts.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 104) : I didn’t realise he played for the Sharks and I was hoping the SHarks have gotten over the whole “appoint a former Sharks player” mentality.

But then again, maybe we need to have somebody with roots firmly entrenched with the franchise to keep the passion for Sharks rugby alive. Come to think of it, I believe it’s actually a good idea. That settles it for me.

  • Hilton College has also appointed an Old Boy as head coach. Brad MacLeod-Henderson played for the Sharks from 1998-2003 before spending time in England and Italy. He recently made a name for himself as a highly successful club rugby coach where he helped College Rovers capture the 2010 National Club Championships title, amongst other honours.

The experienced Tony Richter who coached Hilton for 10 seasons from 2001 to 2010 and was the KwaZulu Natal Craven Week head coach for four of these years will continue in his role as Director of Hilton College Rugby and will no doubt provide MacLeod-Henderson, a rookie coach at schools level with valuable support.

Extracts of a newsletter from Hilton Headmaster Gavin Thomson spelt out the reasons for the external appointment and the path forward for Hilton College sports:
