Now 2013 he reinstates MS despite PL delivering in 2012. Now hand on heart Uli can you honestly say that you would mortgage your home in the knowledge that MS is defending your 10 channel. I know where my money would go and it’s not MS..

  • @JD (Comment 70) : I always say that with a lump in my throat because I always expect a backlash.

Sadly the backlash won’t change much, Lambie is currently the 2nd best flyhalf in SA behind Steyn, isn’t it sad how we always call for SR form to be rewarded, yet when the selection isn’t in the favour of the guy in our franchise, we immediately start to look for weaknesses in the player ahead of him. Yes it Samoa, Scotland and Italy, but Steyn has done well in all 3. He deserves the no.10 jersey

  • @Ludz (Comment 76) : Lambie is the better flyhalf .Morne Steyn’s inadequacies have been plastered over by the introduction of Willie Le Roux.

Useless argument .Us Sharks supporters call a spade a spade and get called biased. The fact is Morne Steyn has been at the core of shit backline play since 2011.

Lets wait until the RC ,and see if we are happy coming 3rd again. That is unless Aus are decimated by injuries by that time.

Just a side note ,we should only play at Loftus while Meyer is the Bok coach ,its the only time his Bullies come out firing.

  • There is a frightening difference between us and the Wallabies & Kiwis. The speed at which they play, the skill and finesse with which they play ,their management of the breakdown and their ability to manipulate defense around the fringes are all far superior to ours.

If the Wallabies don’t get too many injuries ,fix their scrum and get Quade Cooper back into the mix ,they will be deadly come RC.

  • @Talent (Comment 79) : there we go again, having a go at the Bulls again.

Lambie has the potential to be a better flyhalf than Morne, is he there yet, HELL NO!!! He has limitations, yes. Despite those though he remains the better flyhalf and certainly the best choice for the Boks at the moment.

I’m quite astonished that people refuse to give credit where it’s due. The fact is Lambie is untouchable sadly on this site, he doesn’t deserve to start ahead of Morne Steyn. Steyn is doing well and deserves to wear the no.10 jersey

  • @robdylan (Comment 55) : let’s take Rob for example, I am quite sure that he wishes that Bismarck was the 1 wearing the no.2 jersey for the Boks. Does he criticise Strauss instead? No he doesn’t, he acknowledges how well he did yesterday. Last week, Strauss has an average showing and immediately everyone, except a few, goes on about how poor Strauss was and how Bismarck is so much better than him.

I can respect that most of the bloggers here support the Sharks, but let’s avoid getting to the point where we start to sound ridiculous.

  • @Ludz (Comment 81) : Stop being so diplomatic. Morne is limited ,how can you be happy with him at flyhalf? There are many who “deserved” that Bok jersey perhaps more than him that have not been give the chance.

Lets look outside South Africa for a second. Lets think where Steyn would lie on an international pecking order of flyhalves. How can we expect to be the best if we play players who lie on 5th, 6th maybe as low as 8th on the list? And I know you’ll say its relative to the playing style of a team ,but that just highlights the problems with our Rugby.

I doubt we will ever beat the All Blacks for a sustained period of time as long as we prescribe to the same brand of Rugby .That brand of Rugby requires Morne Steyn type flyhalfs. That brand of Rugby should be buried and forgotten. The sooner the better.

  • Lambie has been a shining light in a mostlydismal Sharks team this season. I’ll have no problem with him at Bok 10. He’ll do an excellent job.
However, Steyn has been equally good so far and in pecking order system, he’ll still get the nod at 10. That’s fine also.

The Bulls’ back-line has been very sharp this season. Steyn must get some of the credit for that. Contrast to the Sharks’ back-line that has been very flat (figuratively) this year and last with Lambie at 10. You fellows of http://www.LambieWorld.co.za should move on from the ’10 CC final now.
Who is the best ball carrying fly-half, is a little immaterial as long as they have Le Roux. The player with number 10 on his back, whatever his name, will have to play a territorial game and be a stand in fullback whenever Willie weaves his magic.

Until such time, we’ll have to take your comments for where it comes from.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 86) : Well put ,actually. I struggle to see a reason for Lambie being dropped when for the best part of 3 years Steyn has been below par. The selection at 10 came down to 1 game ,the game where they squared off when last the Bulls and Sharks played, and as far as I am concerned neither had the complete performance, however Lambie at least got stuck in.

So then to me it’s a question of who Meyers sees fit to execute his archaic game plan best; whilst the question should be who has the most to offer as well of who is capable of carrying out the game plan?

To put things in perspective at how backwards a step Morne Steyn is have a look at this tribute to Quade Cooper. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPDiyzacmcQ

Lambie is the right age and he is set to remain in the country.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 86) : Thank you, you said it all sir

@FireTheLooser (Comment 88) : I’ll never defend a player that’s off form, if say a Wimpie van der Walt is selected for the Boks but doesn’t perform. I’ll never defend them if a player is better than them. I apply the same principle with my fellow Queenians at the Sharks. Yes I’ll go on about how good Allan, Sbura and Plank are and were at school. Do I call for Allan to start ahead of Chadwick or Beast at loosehead? Do I call for Sbura to start ahead of Lwazi or JPP? Do I call for Plank to be fast tracked into the senior team. I think not on all 3.

Do I call them future stars? Of course I do, I know what they’re capable of better than most if not all on here. Do I think 1 day Allan will be good enough to start ahead of Chadwick or Sbura ahead of Mvovo or Plank ahead of Keegan or Kanko at 8? HELL YEAH!!!

It’s different to you guys calling for Lambie to start ahead of Morne when clearly on current form Morne is the better flyhalf. It’s very different to what I do with Allan, Sbura and Plank on here. Always back those okes, but never gonna say they should start ahead of a more deserving player

Like Morne Steyn is in any part much better than Lambie .The guy plays like Id imagine captain hook would -peg legged ,eye patched and hook handed  For Meyer to select Steyn all he needs to do is make his kicks at poll. His kicking out of hand is not even up to his own usual standards. Lambie on the other hand cant miss tackles, doesn’t have carte blanche to play how he sees fit and is criticized if he does. Lambie is set up to fail ,dropped at the first chance Meyer gets. Steyn gets 30 caps before we see him play a complete flyhalf showing, then plays one game where his team has the upper hand against another flyhalf and suddenly all the mans detractors have changed their minds, forgetting the abysmal outings theyve had to endure. There is definitely a double standard.

  • Last year Lambie was better but Lambie did not show that same form. He did look good when he came on for the Bokke but he must, in the last couple weeks of super rugby, show the same form as last year before he can be Bok 10 again. But that’s only what I think.

  • Ill eat my words if we end ranked 1st this year. Then we can justify Steyn’s selection and Meyers game plan. Sadly I’m not sure we will even manage to beat the Ab’s once this year ,and we will struggle against the Wallabies(provided they don’t get ravaged by injuries).

  • @Talent (Comment 94) : all you base your criticism of Morne on is the fact that he misses a few tackles, yes Lambie can defend the 10 channel. So what, does that make him a better game manager? does it make him a better distributor of the ball? Currently Morne ticks those boxes. It’s a damn shame when people critcise to further the case of their own preffered candidates

  • Its so unfortunate that our Rugby has reached a point where our selection criteria has become blind to the needs of general play .

You wont hear Retalick and Rumano mentioned as a 5 lock or a 4 lock…no that’s our own dogma. They do it all; clean ,tackle ,ruck and maul until the cows come home. Their(NZ)flyhalves not only are competent goal kickers but they are good in general play too. Without Le Roux ,JJE and Habana our backline would have looked blunt ,even against the opposition we played.

  • I’m not saying Steyn is perfect, he has weaknesses, but Lambie has limitations as well. Super Rugby form though, Steyn must be start. He’s a proven match winner for the Boks, Lambie is a match winner for the Sharks, big difference

  • Luds ,atleast Lambie tackles and attacks the gain line. Given exposure and equal opportunities ,he would far surpass anything Morne is, that is ,if he hasn’t already surpassed him.

I understand Meyer has a game plan and he selects his flyhalf based on the needs of that game plan. That’s short sighted ,to say the least.

The thing to me that stands out like a sore thumb is how much Le Roux improves our back line when he gets the ball at either first or second receiver. We inevitably end up scoring or breaking the line, can you not see the stark contrast?

I admire you for being diplomatic and fair(in your mind) but I just can’t agree with you. Continue to play Steyn-like players and we will be eaten alive by the ever evolving players from Aus/NZ.

  • @Talent (Comment 105) :

You’re the guy with the closed mind.

The Bulls have had more success than the Sharks whilst playing with less talent. The game-plan must have its merits.

Likewise the Boks have less talent on the field than the All Blacks almost every time they play. Even Aus, between union and league, have more available back-line talent than SA.

The only way we can hope to be competitive, is to play a clever game-plan that leverages our strengths and exploits their weaknesses. That’s what the Bulls do. To call in archaic and outdated is just ignorant.

  • Currently, based on form, Morne Steyn is the better player and his no 10 jersey is justified. But I do think that as soon as the Shark’s forwards front up and Lambie can get some decent ball consistantly, that he will regain his superior form.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 108) : the difference is that we all know Morne Steyn is the form flyhalf in SA, yet we all blatantly turn a blind eye on his form to further our own calls for Lambie to start by pointing out Steyn’s limitation. Praise Lambie like I do with Allan, Sbura and Plank, but calling for them to start ahead of more deserving players is gibberish. Steyn deserves the no.10 jersey

  • @Ludz (Comment 110) : I’m not sure how you get to “we all know Steyn is the form fh”?

If we were all that biased, why are we not calling for Marcell to be included in the Springbok team?

MS is good at what he does, and that’s it, he hasn’t and will never acquire any new skills, he won’t ever be an exciting prospect.

Without Willie at fh on attack, our backline will always be bland. So now MS is supposed to be the best we have for defensive play (seeing as Willie is used for the attacking backline moves)be it kicking for touch or defending his channel and kicking for goal. On all three counts Lambie has been more effective for the Boks. MS is only better than Lambie with the placement of his up-and-unders, that’s it.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 106) : The problem with us is we don’t encourage skill on field. Players arrive at unions with a step and some flair and first thing we do is make them bulk up and get them in the mind set of going to ground and setting up the next phase. I’ve heard it bemoaned by some high ranking people ,who’ve had a fair amount to do with various unions in South Africa aswell as being based overseas with some prestigious honors behind their coaching cv.

To call me close minded and then in the same breath say we dont have the same caliber back line player the aus and kiwis do is close minded. The diference is their players are encouraged to play a certain way ,that im sure our players are more than capable of. Its a sad ,sad sight seeing JDV reduced to a crashball merchant, next up to full his shoes ;Jan Serfontein. :|
