Smit sets the record straight on Plumtree

After an initially very negative reaction to “the John Plumtree incident”, Mercury rugby writer Mike Greenaway has done a really good follow-up piece, which I encourage you all to read.

The article, which appears here on IOL, comes after Greenaway and new CEO John Smit sat down for a chat and explains, in Smit’s typically forthright style, how the events leading to Plumtree’s “shock sacking” actually unfolded.

To my mind, a fair few loose ends are now satisfactorily tied up. Smit revelas that his first port of call on returning to the country would have been a sit-down meeting with Plumtree and that the two had already had that meeting scheduled, only for the Nick Mallett approach appeared to appear in the papers the day before it was due to take place. Far from being led to believe that his contract would definitely have been renewed, Plumtree himself had apparently requested an urgent meeting with Smit and was even prepared to fly to London to have that discussion; Plum isn’t a stupid man and he must have known that his future was at least uncertain given results over the last five years. This paints a very different picture to the one Brian van Zyl has chosen to reveal.

Smit sticks to his guns and insists that while he continues to have the utmost respect for Plumtree as a hands-on coach (describing him as the best he’s ever worked under), he felt that a change was needed for the sake of the players. It’s naive to assume that Smit would have made that call all on his own without having the backing of those players, as some seem to be suggesting.

Things are not great between Plumtree and Smit at the moment, as one would expect and the new CEO, at least, expresses regret at that and hopes that in time things can improve between the two of them. Smit is adamant that he is one the right track, though, telling Greenaway “the bottom line is that it is time for a change in the way we play, the way we manage players, and for us to have a combined coaching structure for all our teams across the board. We need a rugby revival.”

  • I really see a bright future for the sharks. Smit is definitely talking the right language. Now it is just abou the follow through and how they will make it happen.

  • That Director of Coaching position is an interesting one.

Very excited that Smit wants more specialist coaching instead of the typical Head coach, Forward assistant coach, backline assistant coach.

  • Whoever gets the job needs to encourage dynamic Rugby. I liked Plumtree ,he wasn’t afraid to encourage x factor type play. I would have liked to see him stay on in some capacity, although it probably would have been awkward.

Dawie Theron doesnt excite me too much ,but im open minded. He has been successful with the Griquas and dug up some dam good players in his time there.

I wonder if Butch James will do what Spencer did at the Lions. I could see him doing that.

  • Reading between the lines it seems that there are many snakes in the grass. Smittie saying the right things but not covering himself (and the new board) in glory here, well in my book anyway.

So we had enquiries from 2 world cup winning coaches and settled for a DOR, who is not going to be with us full time (I also doubt that he will relocate to Durban, I hope I’m wrong) and a current first team coach.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 3) : Mallett still seems to have the same vendetta against the Sharks that cost him the World Cup and subsequently his job in 1999.

I saw a number of commentators here punting Mallett for the new head coach position before this whole mess blew up. Have we forgotten and forgiven him for his shocking treatment of Gary Teichmann? That would be like saying I no longer wake up screaming “Run, Alan and Lance!”

You’ve mentioned on a number of occasions that you don’t feel there is anything wrong at the Sharks, with van Zyl’s leadership, Straeuli’s day-to-day handling of affairs, or Plumtree’s coaching. I take it your ideal scenario would have been for the status quo to continue?

An approach was clearly made to Mallet, it was rejected and now a big part of the article is spent trying to tell all that Mallet is the bad guy and was never part of the plans.

If I was ever in the position to make the choices and Jake White came Knocking Im sure I would entertain the thought of having him around.

This is for me the most exciting part, and a clear sign that we have put the right guy in the job. This will help build the distinctive style and culture that we are missing right now -allowing Juniors to seamlessly step into the senior side, while taking away or dependance on imports.

  • Director of Rugby or Coaching doesn’t really matter to me. My interpretation is that the Sharks want to play one style of rugby form the senior side to the u/19 side hence the need for a “Brendon Ventor” type of person to co-ordinate that. The Sharks are also going to share coaches across the board but the coaches of the different teams will still be responsible for their team. I like this as it will give the players direction and allow them to know exactly what it is that they need to do to meet their the coaches requirement of them and what they need to do to make it to the next level. It will allow the smoother integration of youngsters into the senior side. We will also do away with a Kanko type of situation where one player is being blamed for our poor showing (funny that the poor showing continued when Kanko was dropped) when it’s not clear what he is doing wrong when comparing his performance and the performance of his team-mates.

He literally took them from no-hopers to being consistently at the top of the Premiership pile.
Its a massive coup to get him on board and he can surely turn-around the Sharks flailing fortunes.

Salmo – you cant surely be advocating more of the same, can you? Its not like things are progressing at the Sharks… by all accounts they are falling apart? No?

Where to even start with this article.

“I was phoned by a journalist and asked a direct question: ‘Did the Sharks approach you?’ I was not going to lie, and answered that they had, but I had told them that I am not interested in coaching rugby at this point in my life. I am happy doing work with SuperSport.”

    Ermm… no comment?

The approach to Mallett came via a phone call from Saracens chief executive Edward Griffiths, who was acting as an intermediary for Smit, who for the past two years has played for the London club.

“There was no mention made of confidentiality,” Mallett said. “And in any case, I assumed that Plumtree had been told. This is usually how it works in rugby. The existing coach is informed, and then approaches are made to prospective successors.

Because thats the way things work in SA? You of all people should really know better Nick.

Issues to do with behaviour, tact and good taste are rarely wirtten down.

It is, however, a rule of thumb that you become somewhat circumspect when talking to journalists if you want to remain employed in your chosen profession for any length of time.

  • @robdylan (Comment 68) : Rob I am all for Smit the greatest Bok off all time, Smit the captain always. Smit is crossing over into my profession now and the warning signs are all there that he is acting like someone who is running 200km an hour. In the short term these guys like smit who tosses all the cards around and brings down the house in record time usually rebuild in record time, the most common signs of this in business is short term success, long time mishap. He should have walked alongside van Zyl for a Time, and left plumtree to have a vote to his successor. You always build up good things in management and tend to look past the bad if you ‘get by’ or has relative success. Smit maybe would have identified the 30% he want to chainge In his time with the ‘current Management Now he is running blind and inexperienced into a new job at who’s cost? Just a thought on Smit I will later high light some warning signs if I have my laptop open. The thing is all great leaders where great apprentices, you need to have everyone thinking of there leader with confidence – all levels of management if people doubt Smit the business leader how is it going to influence the final product, Louis Luit was the perfect example of using solid principles in management within this space…

  • Guys, how do we move from having Nick Mallet and Jake White on our wish list to a 1st team coach? Not happy that Brendon Venter won’t be moving to Durban. Might need a rethink from John Smit, maybe he should advertize the post to see if we can get someone with a CV to write home about. There’s actually no rush as Venter will coach the side during the CC.

  • Basic ethics.

Giving a truthful and direct answer to a direct question.
    RIGHT

Actively looking for a replacement, without informing an employee he is to be fired.
    WRONG

The best case scenario here is, that it was just a case of inexperience and not a lack of integrity.

  • Smit says Mallet was grandstanding by confirming to a journalist he was asked about the Sharks job…….yet the same Smit feels it appropriate to mention Jake White was keen on the post? I wonder if this did not place White in a tough spot at the Brumbies? Is Smit not doing exactly what he accuses Mallet of doing?

  • Don’t get me wrong, I like Plumtree but the poor guy has not had a break in how many years?

Wasn’t he supposed to take the Currie Cup off last year to upskill and get more exposure? Did he choose to stay or was he asked to stay?

Either way, there hasn’t been a new idea at the Sharks and how we should play in how long? We’ve become a bit like the Boks in that we have Plan A and if it works fantastic but there’s no back up if the opposition counter our first strength.

Just take a look at the Brumbies game. Up until then our pack was dominating and we weren’t winning pretty but we were winning. The Brumbies come along, they blunt our forwards and all of a sudden within 20 minutes we’re chasing a losing cause.

Some of that rests with the players but why isn’t there a back up plan in place to compensate for when the opposition has parity with us? That’s the coach’s issue.

  • Ok, guys, it happened, we didn’t handle this well, fine, let’s move on. Most of agree sacking Plum was the right thing to do. He ran out of ideas, if he was battling, he should have requested help in the form of specialist coaches ages ago. He didn’t do that and the Sharks suffered. He decided to protect his turf and remain loyal to Bash and HRE at our expense.
