Macleod-Henderson to coach Sharks

The Mercury has this morning revealed that former Sharks flanker – and current Director of Rugby at Hilton College – Brad Macleod-Henderson is set to take take over the hands-on coaching reigns for the Sharks during the upcoming Currie Cup season.

Macleod-Henderson cut his coaching teeth in England and Italy before returning to Durban to lead College Rovers to a maiden National Club Championship trophy in 2010. He was set to resume his role as assistant coach for the Sharks under 21 side this year, but in a surprising move, now looks to assume the mantle of head coach for the Sharks, with Sean Everitt tipped to be his deputy.

The paper further alleges that John Smit is set to meet with John Plumtree and his legal representatives tonight to negotiate a settlement for the outgoing coach. Plumtree apparently believes that he had a verbal and binding agreement from Brian van Zyl that his contract would be extended for two further years and clearly plans to take a large chunk of money out of Smit’s coffers as a “parting gift” to the union.

Sharksworld’s information is that The Mercury is correct regarding the coaching position and while we wait for the formal announcement of Brad’s new role, we can start by informally wishing him well in the new challenges he’ll face.

  • Haha was to be expected. Curtain about to open for the 2nd set of the Growthpoint Drama. Van Zyl did no-one a favour by admitting in public that he had nothing to do with this decision. Plum will now ride on that in order to put money where it hurts. Money heals all in our modern day world-sic.

Good luck to Mr Henderson, hope all works out for him.

  • What teams did he coach in england and italy? Yoh what a decision. Did the board really back van zyl’s “verbal agreement” with plum? This is just all very wrong. Ay. I sincerely hope this saga gets sorted out quickly.

I thought Brendon Venter was to coach the Sharks during the Currie Cup.

All the best for the new position.

I think we should just christen him BMH and get it over with? :)

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 10) : Salmo, all I know for sure is that he will be head coach for the Currie Cup. I’m sure that Smit and Venter both know that the step up from club/school to Super Rugby is a huge one. We might see a bigger name appointed to work with Brad – and I guess above him – for Super Rugby. That’s an assumption though. I simply don’t know.

  • On what grounds did Van Zyl decide to commit to Plumtree? Smit had told him and the board ages ago that he would not be renewing his contract. Another option is to keep him employed at the Sharks and let him coach the Vodacom side. As an employer I can “redeploy” you.

  • I think Plumtree is grasping at straws here. If the was no signed contract and only a verbal approval from a CEO who was already being replaced and as such most likely did not have the authority to make such decisions – his chances of winning any court battle are slim to none.

I bet that should such a contact be signed that more than the sharks CEO signature would be required and thus a verbal agreement would require the same mandate.

@Viking (Comment 24) : Pretty much agree with you. The ref this weekend needs to be a little more consistent with the advantage rule though. Let Aussies go through 20 phases before calling advantage over. Then let’s the B/L have 3 phases calls advantage over and try on the other side.

But then that’s what we’ve been struggling with for a long time now with refs from that little island – consistent rulings.

  • It might be a left field thought, but what about Snor as head coach? We have a quality Director of Rugby, seemingly a quality coach in BMH, how about a good player manager as head coach? Venter, BMH and co devise strategy and playing style, Snor does the man management and post match interviews. From all accounts he’s an amazing player manager and lets face it, he gave the best soundbytes in history!

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 44) : the feasible answer is this… the outgoing CEO was stepping outside of mandate by attempting to offer the coach an extension against the wishes of both the board and the new CEO. Plumtree, to his credit, sought the meeting with Smit to clarify the position which is why Smit agreed to settle the matter ahead of his official start.

Go read the press release. The Board decided not to renew Plumtree’s contract and Smit broke the news. Nobody was fired.

  • @robdylan (Comment 46) : Have to agree with you on this one.

Plum has not been fired. He’s been informed that his contract will not be renewed.

I think that in terms of the decision of John Smit ahead of his official start of his term as CEO, the decision to renew Plum’s contract is out of the ambit of Van Zyl’s authority as the current CEO of the Sharks as it will take place after he has stepped aside and into an advisory role to the new CEO. Any decision made regarding the renewal of contracts, etc. should be under the control of the incoming CEO.

Otherwise a CEO who is really p**sed off with his company for hiring his replacement could go out and sign twenty year contracts with other service providers and screw the company over for the next 20 years or until they go bang due to his poor management.

By signing the 5 year contract with Growthpoint, he’s screwed the Sharks over if they were considering moving over to Moses Mabhida in the next 60 months.

  • Well sorry if I don’t join in everyone’s excitement at the news of BMH’s appointment as Shark’s coach.
I really enjoyed Plum as a coach and I thought he did an excellent job with the team during the years he spent with them. I was sad to hear that he was being replaced, but not dissapointed, because I felt it was time for him to move on and for someone with new and exciting ideas to take charge at the Sharks. Obviously the way the termination of Plum’s contract was handled left a lot to be desired, but I’ll believe John Smit’s version that it was Mallett’s fault, mainly because I think that such behaviour would be entirely consistent with Mallett’s ego driven personality.
But back to BMH. He was pretty average when he played for the Sharks anyway, but what exactly qualifies him to coach a team like the Sharks? As far as I can see, his credentials are that he played for the Sharks, coached in England and Italy for a few years, coached club rugby in Durban for a year and is currently the coach of a very average high school 1st team and an assistant coach at Natal u21 level. With no disrespect to BMH and his coaching experience (he must have done something right, it is rumoured that he is on an alleged R1 million pa contract at the school he coaches for), is he the most experienced and best coach that the Sharks could come up with?
I think we are going to miss John Plumtree big time in the coming months and I think the lack of loyalty shown to a coach who was committed to Sharks rugby for such a long period is very poor. Unlikely though it is that he will be successful in his bid to claim 2 years compensation from the Sharks, I for one will be happy if he gets it.
Anyway, just my 2c worth of ramblings from a somewhat disillusioned Sharks fan.

What Van Zyl should have done is inform Plum that his renewal was subject to board approval. What the Sharks will have to show is that Plum, from previous dealings was always aware that Van Zyl wasn’t the final decision maker and that all his decisions were taken to the board for approval.

We’ll either succeed or fail, which means decisions can be taken on a suitable way forward.

You forget that all though the Sharks were not super champs. They did win the CC twice under him. Something allot of other Big name coaches tried to with them and managed nothing. Also in the last four comps we played in we played in three of the finals. That is something to brag about. Yes we made the Super one from 6th on the log, but geez we did still get to the final. if we won the final with 1 point no one would have worried about us ending 6th on the log, everyone would have just bragged that we are champs.

My point I am getting to is, with BMH there, and Venter not there on a permanent basis. That to me shows the Sharks are in for a long long road of more downs than ups. BMH is being setup to try and learn how to be a coach. What makes him so special now to be trained to be a coach? Why is he leapfrogging Everet to the top? Something is not right there.

I was pretty happy when it was announced that Brendan Venter was to be head coach. he is an experienced coach, he has been around for a while and he has coached at a fairly high level in the past. Then it turns out that Venter is not actually the coach, but will coach the Sharks Currie Cup team for 2013, and a new head coach will still be recruited. Now we hear that Venter will not even be relocating to Durban, will carry on with his role at Saracens, albeit on a part time basis and will not in fact be coaching the Sharks Currie Cup side this year. This honour is given to an ex-scoolboy coach who has absolutely no top level coaching experience.
And no-one at Sharksworld except Uli thinks this is a bit strange. Since when was Sharksworld the spin doctors for the KZN Rugby Union? is John Smit out of his depth already? I certainly hope not. Sorry to say, but something stinks in the state of Sharks rugby.

But I’m just glad things are changing and we won’t have to endure more of the same. If van Zyl had it his way, we would have seen this exact same cycle repeat for the next 5 years, because it was the comfortable route to take, where the outcome was known.

Smit is taking the uncomfortable road to success. He is turning a blind eye to the fear of the unknown, and embracing it. With his experience, he obviously feels that the coach should be better at player management rather than technical coaching ability.

That’s what he had under both Jake White and PdV, and he experienced Venter’s revolutionary technical abilities at Saracens.

Let’s hope his theory pays off.

Plus, hopefully with Smittie there now, old Sharks players like Jouba, Teichmann and Mark Andrews would be willing to come help out as consultants etc. I think that I heard somewhere a few years ago that they approached the Sharks about helping out but where turned down by the management?

Had we got another head strong head coach, they would be butting heads with Venter on a regular basis. I guess that is why Smittie got a strategist as Direct and a man Manager as head coach. I also take it then that the assistants will be two great hands on coaches.

Now I would like to ask you, why are you so ok with everything happening at the Sharks? I would have thought you for one would have rather wanted a top tier coach to take us forward. But I get the feeling that each time JS does something you are ok with it, because its JS.
I am just being real here mate. I thought Venter coming to the Sharks was awesome until I heard that he will be running the show from cape town. Now he will be in CT, with a really experienced coach running the show from Durbs, that is a huge risk.
Now another thing I want to know is how much does the senior players respect BMH as head coach? I dont know so I cant tell, I hope for his sake they do, and that he has a really good relationship with them.

Now, who was the guy that opted to pick him for 8 weeks with an injury? Smit? BMH? Or Plum?

Or have you heard something different?

  • @Uli (Comment 127) : But I get the feeling that each time JS does something you are ok with it, because its JS

No, it’s not that. It’s that I’m not going to write off anything that he’s decided to do before I’ve seen it in action and weighed up the pros and cons for myself. Let’s face it, we all think we’re very clever and know everything that goes on, but there isn’t a one of us that understands the REAL issues within the Sharks today even a tenth as well as Smit himself does.

You guys tend to go on as if there’s this big Fantasy Rugby shopping list of top coaches and players available for Smit to just sign up to the Sharks at the drop of a hat. What none of you are prepared to concede is that this is currently a very damaged brand, which limits the options in terms of who would be willing to jump in immediately.

  • Ive heard about the injury, but that was only around here – to me its ridiculous to solely blame the coach for a player playing with an injury – the medical team and the player himself must first stand in line to take the punch for that. No coach can force a player to play, and play as well as PSdT did, with an injury that needed special attention. I f the injury was that serious the player should make it known.

But back to the point – if I hear otherwise I will let you know.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 93) : He had a meeting with the Board and told them that he was not going to extend Plum’s contract, they gave him the mandate to start acting on behalf of the Sharks hence they are able to say in public that they support him 100%. Doesn’t mean that he is the one that signed Venter’s and BMH’s contracts, as put it, he was not employed by the Sharks. It’s like getting a contractor (agent or lawyer) to act on your behalf. Van Zyl is the bad one here, he knows that the Board makes the final decision and should have known his place. I hear he’s still going around telling everyone that will listen that Plum is the best thing ever and doesn’t agree with our move.

As for all of you refering to BMH as only a school coach you should maybe first find out what’s on his CV before bashing him, also remember super coach White was also a high school coach. BMH will be “trained” by Venter as will all the other Sharks coaches. I also think the new Sharks head coach will be more like the manager in soccer than the “old head coach” that most of us is use to by not coaching players but rather managing the specialist coaches and picking the teams.

Jake White didn’t go directly from coaching school kids to the Bok coach, he had lots of experience with U20′s as well as an assistant under Mallett with the Boks, so that is a very lame argument. You really happy that the Sharks are going to have a coach that needs to be “trained”? This is the Sharks we talking about, not some 2nd rate Vodacom Cup side.

  • Not that I have anything at all against coaches who have started out as school coaches and worked their way up through the coaching ranks, to eventually, once they have succeeded at lower levels, land up with a “plumb” job like coaching the Sharks. Maybe I just has my sights set a bit higher than Hilton College’s 1st team coach. Contributors and posters to this site have continuously emphasized the fact that a team with the quality players that the Sharks have should never be satisfied with performance that is anything less than exceptional. Making the finals of the currie cup for 4 of the last 5 years including winning two, as well as runner up in S15 last year was just too mediocre for a team of the Sharks calibre. Yet we are supposed to sit back and applaud when a coach with no high level achievements is appointed.
    Not me.

I did say Venter will be training ALL the Sharks coaches, I also said that as I see things he will be more of a manager than the old style head coach. To my knowledge BMH coached in England and club champs in Durban before coaching the school side and I did not compare him to super White, the point was to not only use one thing someone did to describe that person. Smit is not an idiot that would appoint just anyone as the head coach, maybe just maybe he knows more about BMH than what we do. Give BMH a fair chance.
