John Plumtree’s involvement with the Sharks has come to an end, effective immediately.

The Sharks have issued a media release, the text of which follows:

“The Sharks confirmed that discussions were held today between representatives of themselves and John Plumtree (“the Parties”).

It was mutually and amicably agreed between the Parties to part ways with immediate effect.

The terms of the agreement concluded between the Parties are confidential.

Stephen Saad, the Chairman of The Sharks said: “We thank John for his wonderful contribution to Sharks rugby over many years. He has been a loyal and faithful employee and The Sharks have benefitted greatly by his input. We are also grateful for the impeccable manner in which he has conducted himself during challenging times in the last while. We wish John all the best in his future endeavours.”"

  • I can imagine it was a very short meeting, with Plum summing up his position in two words. I feel a great deal of sympathy for Plumtree, but I also don’t think that Smit has done anything wrong, and that it might be for the best, provided more intellectual capital is brought in than just Venter.

I know young coaches need to be given a chance to shine – as a Liverpool supporter, I am optimistic about Brendan Rodgers in this way – but I’m nervous when we are approaching the likes of MaCleod-Henderson. “Untested” is the word that worries me, and we can’t fall too far behind the Bulls, the Stormers and now the resurgent Cheetahs. If we’re going to replace Plumtree, we need to replace him with someone who will be an improvement on him – and how hands on Venter will be remains to be seen…

  • Now why on earth would Plumtree be happy with someone coming in over his head and being demoted to forwards coach? Just doesn’t make sense that after 4 years as head honcho it was ever the plan for Plumtree to just be the forwards coach and Plumtree would never have gone for that.

  • Right, my views on this sorry mess.

It was the right time for Plumtree to go. We never reached our potential over the last 4 years. The team always just did enough for “next year to be the year”. I would have been seriously demoralised if the powers that be had decided that Plumtree deserved another ‘chance’. For this reason the recent comments by Van Zyl and ex players like John Allan and Craig Jamieson lambasting Smit for the change reveal a deep seated culture of mediocrity within the Sharks which has permeated the establishment in the last decade. It needs to be addressed.

I was pleased when it was announced that Venter would be made director of rugby and in charge for the Currie Cup to come. I saw this as the new broom to usher in a new culture of excellence and real achievement at the Sharks. Venter has a pretty astute rugby brain.

My pleasure at Venter’s appointment has been somewhat tempered by the fact that we now know:

    (i) Venter will not be in charge for Currie Cup 2013;
    (ii) Venter will not be relinquishing his duties at Saracens;
(iii) Venter will not even be based permanently in Durban; and
(iv) the rumours that Venter will also be practising medicine in Cape Town.

How many bows will Venter have in his quiver? How many balls will he be juggling? How are we certain that he will be able to concentrate squarely on the Sharks and give his best?

Now, with a part time director of rugby the situation may have been saved by the appointment of an experienced head coach with a track record of success. I had hoped that Smit would have made a break from the past tendency of making “old boys” with little experience coaches (Dick Muir, Kevin Putt, Hugh Reece-Edwards, Dolfie Streauli etc) so I am truly shocked at the proposed appointment of Brad Mcleod-Henderson! Even Hilton College’s website in March 2012 describes him as a “rookie school boy coach”! I am concerned at his lack of experience. The Sharks are a big team and not some Mickey Mouse team where a junior coach can learn his trade. For the same reasons I would also have been disappointed if Everitt had been appointed coach but the decision to make BMH coach and Everitt his assistant (the opposite of what they currently are) is bizarre.

Also, I am disappointed by the lack of ambition by some fans who are already writing off our chances in Super rugby next year. Why can we not expect our team to make a serious push for the title (as we should every year with the Sharks) if the new coaching team is given a full Currie Cup to settle in? Since when did the Sharks become a mediocre team?

There are problems at the Sharks. On the field and off the field. The sooner the old guard is out and the new coaches in the better. We need a fresh start and hopefully Smit is savvy enough to be the man to do it properly.

So he is apparently upset his contract didnt get renewed, as he has been loyal to the sharks. Hmmm, this is the same idiot who got rid of adrian jacobs for marius joubert when adi was the springbok incumbent. Lol, what goes around comes around. Only difference is in plums case its truely deserved, well that and also adi didnt wine about it to van zyl and jamieson. I dont care who this new guy is but its a small step in the right direction.

  • There has been a growing swell of support from many quarters for Plumtree’s contract not to be renewed for some time. In another sporting code he would most likely have been replaced before today – especially top echelon soccer. He must have seen this coming and should have expected it. The Sharks board is businessmen. The new stadium sponsors wants seats filled, and to do that Sharks need to perform. Sponsors are not keen to part with cash to support nearly rans and Kings Park and its entire coaching setup and teams costs a lot to run. Whats done is done. Good luck to John Plumtree in his future endeavors and lets support whoever and whatever is to come. Sharks are the only team for me, Sharks forever.

That will go well with my conspiracy theory surrounding the whole team doctor debacle earlier this year.

Especially with the rumors of PSdT being unimpressed by Plum’s insistence on picking him while he was injured.

Imagine if PSdT told the coach he won’t play due to injury, he would have been shipped out with Kanko to play club and sevens trials.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 64) : That was at the Lions, with the Sharks he made some serious inroads having inherited Putt’s utter mess.

Plum inherited Muir’s team and couldn’t get them further than Muir did, bar the 2 CC’s (which Muir would have taken in ’07, a year in which the Sharks really should have taken it).

It took Plum another 5 years to get the Sharks to a SR final. The Sharks have been erratic under Plum, no continuity. One game up, two games down….one season up, two seasons down.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 67) : Saying Dick would have taken this and taken that is like saying Plum would have taken this years trophy except if not for the injuries – its pure conjecture.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 72) : How many years did Plum have with the Sharks vs. Muir?

Muir built a team from the ground up, Plum inherited his team, much like PdV inherited White’s team.

Guess what, the Sharks (not unlike the Boks) are back at rebuilding again. Which means somebody broke something.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 68) : Then its your fault if you cant put your own health in your hands – to blame the coach is a cop out. No one is being forced.

As for Kanko, have you got a copy of the Sharks vs Stormers game at Newlands- if so have a look at it.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 74) : So BMH is inheriting Plums team then?

What do you want to rebuild – the team?

Well lets hope they can rebuild successfully. I personally dont believe there needs to be much rebuilding to be done – if we can hold onto our players

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 75) : So if you face demotion for taking a much needed sick day, and you decide to go into work for the sake of keeping your position, it’s your fault that you didn’t put your health first? I think not.

Re: Kanko, Keegan has been the exception to the rule. Kanko had one bad game, he’s completely exiled. Keegan is still having bad game after bad game and keeps the captain’s armband and starting spot.

And you still wonder why players are unhappy?

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 76) : All the structures need rebuilding, new gameplan, new systems put in place, player management need to be created never mind repaired.

Only the players don’t need replacing (well, most of them anyway)

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 77) : Are you serious – who the hell is going to demote you because you are genuinely sick – anyone doing that will be handed their arse legally.

If a rugby player is carrying an injury and he doesnt come clean about it and plays on through it because he is scared of losing his place to the next guy then its his baby -and there is no waay that the coach can be ssaid to have forced him to play – thats insane.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 79) : That was an illustration, just to give you some perspective.

Obviously if the coach didn’t know that the players were injured it couldn’t have been the coach’s fault, that would be a dumb argument now wouldn’t it.

But if the coach knew and allowed them to play, I’d say the coach should have been the responsible one and told the player “you don’t play”. Much like HM and Craig Roberts did with PSdT.

I think you’re arguing just for the sake of arguing. You just want to find fault, maybe you should hang around news24.

    Guilty on the arguing observation.

    What is news24?
