The Sharks have released a comprehensive medical update ahead of the Blues game.

The bad news is that Wiehahn Herbst and Jandre Marais have both been ruled out of the game, placing the front and second row stocks under considerable strain. Also, both Butch James and Heimar Williams will need to pass fitness tests to be considered for the match.

Jacques Botes and Cobus Reinach, though, are both ready for selection.

Players ready for selection
Cobus Reinach
Jacques Botes
Ryan Kankowski

Players not ready for selection this week
Wiehahn Herbst (groin)
Tim Whitehead (arm fracture, bone not fully united)
Craig Burden (neck)
Frans Steyn (knee surgery)
Meyer Bosman (knee surgery)
Francois Kleinhans (ankle surgery)
Jandre Marais (ankle sprain)
JP Pietersen (groin surgery)

Players to pass fitness test later in the week
Butch James (muscle strain)
Heimar Williams (AC joint sprain)

Players close to ready (in next few weeks)
Craig Burden
JP Pietersen
Tim Whitehead
Meyer Bosman

  • so, concerning that there’s no Herbst available. Leaves us in a bit of a tighthead pickle.

There’s no mention of Peet Marais on the list, so I assume whatever ailed him last week has cleared up.

    I thus pick:

    15 Viljoen 14 Ndungane 13 Ludik 12 James 11 Mvovo 10 Lambie 9 McLeod 8 Kankowski 7 Alberts 6 Botes 5 vd Merwe 4 Hewitt 3 JDuPlessis 2 BDuPlessis (capt) 1 Mtawarira

    16 Cooper 17 Chadwick 18 P Marais 19 Deysel 20 Mtembu 21 Reinach 22 Williams

Keegan will surely still be captain?

If James isn’t ready though, who plays 12 since Heimar is also on the fitness test list?

  • Interesting to see the views on the new coach. i don’t know much about him, but in Plums defence the Sharks had a terrible year with injuries.

The pressure on BMLH is going to be immense. CC is not club rugby. Is a Super 15 coach going to be appointed?

Poor BMLH, he has no idea how fickle Sharks supporters are. The same guys will be calling for his head before long.

  • @JD (Comment 56) : You are more than welcome to be pissed off. I too am a Sharks supporter and I travel hundreds of kilometers whenever there is a Sharks + their related teams in the area to support them. Contrast this with game day at Kings Park where a few diehards pitch up to support the team. This while within 90 km there is a another city and up and down the coast there are good populations of people that also just stay away. I read it here recently of a blogger (so presumeably a huge supporter as well) who was visiting from up country and was a k away from the stadium and proudly mentioned that he did not go to the game.

Yes, when the team is getting favourable results there are a few more bums on seats but when the going gets tough (the time when support is really needed) then the folks stay away.

So from where Im sitting it does not seem so silly.

Couple that with what supposed Sharks fans are continuously blogging about their own team and then I dont think my stir is too far off.

In any case, as Mystic says, players dont sign for teams according to their player base.
