Super Rugby is back

After a month long break Super Rugby is back again this weekend and I have to admit that even though the Sharks all but kicked themselves out of this year’s contest, I can’t wait to see them play again this weekend.

I have had enough time to let go of the preposterous hope that the Cheetahs could still lose against the Stormers and Blues, the Crusaders against the Chiefs and Highlanders or Hurricanes and the Blues against the Chiefs, which if the Sharks win their last 3 games with bonus points will push them into the play-offs (actually we wouldn’t even have to win all three with bonus points). So I haven’t let go completely, but I have come to terms with the fact that it is preposterous.

Aside from keeping track of the abovementioned results to see exactly when it’s officially over for the Sharks, I’m just excited to see the Sharks play again, although injuries continue to plague the team. In fact keeping track of just exactly who’s out and who’s in has become quite a task. Many of the players injured before the international break were due to make their return for the Blues game. But of the returning players only Louis Ludik and Butch James were given a run for the Sharks in the Franchise challenge against the Lions and Bismarck du Plessis looked sharp off the bench for the Boks.

There’s still quite a list of players who weren’t involved and these guys will seemingly not be available come this weekend. Wiehahn Herbst is a new concern as he picked up an injury this past weekend and he seems to be uncertain for selection. Anton Bresler, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Jandre Marais are out. This would give Edwin Hewitt the chance to make his first Super Rugby appearance, but the Sharks have just about a full compliment to select from in the loose forwards (Jacques Botes being the only uncertainty) and we’ll probably see these guys cover the second row.

It looks as though we might see a midfield partnering of Butch James and Louis Ludik, who had an excellent first outing at outside centre against the Lions this past weekend, which might be the best option given the amount of injuries in this area. Tim Whitehead, Paul Jordaan and Frans Steyn picked up serious injuries during this season and although Steyn and Whitehead’s return were predicted around this time, we haven’t seen their names mentioned as possible options yet. Meyer Bosman and JP Pietersen would have been another option in the midfield, but it seems both these players are also still unavailable.

Even with all the injuries the Sharks should still be able to put up a decent side to face the Blues this weekend and the prospect of Bismarck making his return is especially exciting. He hasn’t run out for the Sharks since the Super Rugby final against the Chiefs last year and after 30 minutes or so for the Boks he looks ready to go. Hopefully some of this could rub off on the team.

After three weeks Super Rugby returns. For the Sharks, unless you believe in the preposterous, these three weeks can be used to redeem themselves, to build some momentum going into the Currie Cup and again just build some faith in the team and what they are capable of. We hear it all the time, winning is a culture and I believe that the Sharks have slowly lost that culture this season. They’ve lost the belief. The season may be just about over, but there is never a bad time to just win and play good rugby.

  • @JD (Comment 2) : Ive already handed my wife the “sports Pass”. With rugby (S15 and Lions and CC 1st division) and the start of the tour de France, weekends will be spent in front of the TV flipping between the SS channels

  • Will be good top see the team in action again, but I have no illusions that we will qualify.

  • Big Fish the Sharks have “gone back to the drawing board” so many times that it’s now full and time for a new one.
