Another second row injury in Sharks system

We’ve learned that promising Sharks under 19 lock Gideon Koegelenberg has suffered a serious knee injury and will miss the entire season as a result.

The 1.99m tall “Koegies” showed great commitment to his province in turning out for the Sharks under 19 side last year, while still a 17-year-old schoolboy at Hugenote in the Cape. He made a few appearances for the Sharks XV in the Vodacom Cup this season as well, a huge achievement for an 18-year-old tight forward in his first year at the Academy. As such, it was widely expected that Koegies would be a mainstay in the under 19 tight five this year, with a possibility of even playing under 21 rugby too.

Unfortunately, it seems that those dreams will need to be put on hold, as Koegies suffered an ACL rupture during a routine training exercise some weeks back. He has already come through the reconstruction operation successfully and starts with the long, hard process of rehabilitation. He is expected to be out of rugby for anything up to nine months.

We’d like to wish Gideon all the best for a full and speedy recovery.

  • @bobby 26 (Comment 6) : Bobby, to be honest, this is just a symptom of the desire to do “too much with too little” at junior levels.

The Sharks are a distant third or even fourth choice for most of the real “big name” youngsters and as a result, when we do manage to net a big fish (against the odds), we tend to really overuse them.

The fact that Gideon had already played half a season of under 19 rugby, as well as a few Vodacom games, before he should have appeared in a Sharks jersey for the first time kind of back that up.

For the record, I disagreed with the decision to pick Pieter-Steph for Super Rugby last year as well.

  • Rob must agree with you and bobby26 some talented youngsters get “pushed” in with the big guys when their bodies are not ready, think of Pollard, Goosen, PSDT and the list goes on.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : I saw in puppies first year what money they wasted, some of the rubbish they contracted from the Eastern Cape, could have pooled that cash and bought some quality players, with a long term plan.

  • Rob I think this is not only a Sharks problem it’s national and I do not see a solution to this except for coaches not taking chances with youngsters, get them to be more responsable when playing them above their age group.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : I don’t know, but there is a second year oke in puppies digs that played u19 sharks last year that is getting less now than a oke who’s best achievement is old boys u20 to date, now what doe’s that tell you.Seems to be no consistency, and i have a couple more examples and i think that also breeds unhappiness.

  • bobby 26 I do think the academy contract the players with a long term plan in mind but nobody can get it right every time.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : jees, sorry my point is that they know how talented that oke is but still choose to stuff that oke around, after a year he has a track record and he is flippen good, we can not allow a guy like that slip throw our fingers. So who at the Sharks goes around and speaks to these players to insure they stay after having spent a years worth of money on them already.

  • @bobby 26 (Comment 17) : good point. And I think the answer is nobody.

But this culture of poor man management – of not keeping players informed about where they fit in and how they’er doing – comes right from the top. That, ultimately, is the reason I’m most glad that Plumtree is gone.

  • @JD (Comment 16) : the Sharks have been at it for a long time, they should contract their new okes for one year, thus getting a far better idea of that person during his first year at the academy, before committing to a longer contract, now they sit with a bad choice for 3 years

  • @bobby 26 (Comment 19) : what worries me, though, is that all the power seems to have shifted towards the player at that level. The op okes come out of school with an inflated opinion of their own importance given that 2-3 unions have been in a bidding war for their services since the age of 16.

Won’t help for the Sharks to only offer 1 year contracts if the Bulls are offering a 3-year deal to the top 4 okes in each position.

  • @bobby 26 (Comment 19) : In PSduT’s case the contract period should have been 6 years, at least.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 21) : and then the guy breaks a leg in his first year out of school and never manages to be quite the same? And you’re stuck paying him for 6 years?

Glad you’re not running things there, Salmo my mate.

  • @robdylan (Comment 20) : I can just imagine what CW players must think their futures are. Almost every first team player I come across, many from no name schools, firmly believe that they can make it on the bigger stage. Many also believe that they have it in them to coach at top level as well.

One doesnt want to dash anyones dreams but some reality needs to be instilled in many of these guys.

  • @robdylan (Comment 22) : I said PSduT specifically – and in his case I will get him the best medical attention, he can even be off for a year if he can still give the Sharks 5 good years.

So you think short term contracts (1 year) for your stars are the way to go.
