The Sharks have issued a clarification to yesterday’s media statement regarding John Plumtree and the Sharks’ coaching structures.

As was widely assumed, assistant coaches Grant Bashford and Hugh Reece-Edwards will take joint responsibility for coaching of the Super Rugby side following Plumtree’s departure.

This is an interim move until the end of the current Super Rugby season only. New Director of Rugby Brenden Venter will take charge of coaching matters ahead of the Currie Cup season, with permanent coaching appointments for the future still to be announced.

  • It must be tough being a Sharks coach now. How about an interview with one of these guys Rob?

Both must be feeling a little bit of stress. Do they have a position going forward or have they been given their papers in a less spectacular fashion and just getting on with business until their time comes?

I’m waiting for the dust to settle before sticking my nose in there.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Understand completely.

Plum has an advantage in that he knows the path forward now. It’s the other guys who could be left dangling in the wind.

  • @JD (Comment 4) : and if we lose all our games under him, how will that be worse than the rest of the season?

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : Agreed.

The problem we have after this mediocre season is just about any coach who get one or two results will seem like an improvement to us. But over the long term we might have exactly the same issues if we settle for just anyone now.

“with permanent coaching appointments for the future still to be announced” Sounds as if Jake White might still be in with a shout??

  • @JD (Comment 4) : YOU forget these 2 coached that team last Friday, Had we not been cheated by a ref we would have won,

Look at the type of rugby we played, even with a broken scrum with so many injuries.

Maybe they were also being held back?? who know, we are all so quick to trash people, but yet we have no idea as to what really happens or does not happen.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 6) : no, it doesn’t. It means that the Sharks have not officially said anything about Brad Macleod-Henderson YET.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : Must say I am very skeptical about the possible Henderson appointment Rob, Maybe it is because I don’t see him having enough experience.

Or you also uncertain, but just happy it is a change??

I have also heard very good reports from the players who have worked with Brad.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Coaching the Sharks is probably a bit like coaching the French, which means Player Management is a VERY important attribute…which is why I’m with you on this one.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 11) : So look, I think I went on record with what I wanted to do.

I wanted to make Everitt head coach for Currie Cup and bring in an experienced guy to work above him for Super Rugby. I’m not against what’s being done now, though. A change is needed and I’m going to give Brad (and John) my fullest backing.

  • sharks_lover Reece-Edwards already showed us what he can do as head coach and if you can’t remember you have to trust me if I say it was not good!!!!! I know this must be done as there’s no time to get a new head coach for the last 3 games, but I don’t have to like having them coach the Sharks either.

  • @JD (Comment 17) : I am not for one minute suggesting HRE as head coach nor Bashy, But I also do not think they need to thrown out like dog shit as they were not as bad as is being made out to be, we won 2 CC’s and made a few finals with Bashford there and HRE, yes they worked under the head coach.

  • Rob I must agree with you, Smit will sit with egg on his face if the new head coach flop so I do think that he will pick someone that has something special to add to the Sharks.

  • TheGoose and sharks_lover I don’t think they should be fired or be thrown out like dog sh!t. Let them finish super rugby, but would think long and hard before renewing their contracts. Sharks rugby is in bad shape and Plum is not the only one to blame!

Or was it maybe a bit premature, coz I’m not hearing that anything from the Sharks that his appointment is finalized.

  • For the Plumtree sympathisers who wanted to see him stay on for a while longer, a bit of perspective: in the time Plumtree has been in charge the Bulls have won the Super trophy twice. ‘Nuff said. We need someone to take us to the next level.
