It’s 1 July, folks and that means the Sharks officially have a new Chief Executive Officer.

John William Smit, Polokwane’s finest export and former Head Boy of Pretoria Boys High School, World Cup, Tri-Nations and Lions Series champion, most-capped ever Springbok (both as player and as captain) and so on and so forth today takes office as CEO, replacing the outgoing Brian van Zyl.

We’re pretty sure John already has an overflowing in-tray and a host of matters requiring his attention. Here’s wishing him plenty of strong coffee – as well as unwavering support from the team working with him as he seeks to restore the Sharks to their former glory – back when they were undisputed the best provincial franchise in the country, if not the world.

Welcome (back) to the Tank, Mr Smit – and all the best. We’re right here if you need us.

  • @Uli (Comment 2) : He isn’t at the top, he is still there as advisory until his original resignation date. I believe it is sometime in march next yr ( i stand to be corrected), it is to assist with the transition. But he doesn’t have the same authority as before.
