According to an unverified tweet from EyeWitness News, Sharks assistant coaches Hugh Reece-Edwards and Grant Bashford appear set to leave on completion of the current Super Rugby season.

The news agency quotes Reece-Edwards as saying that neither will have their contract renewed.

More info on this as we get it.

  • Wouldn’t be that big of a surprise to be honest. If the ideal is to inject some fresh ideas into the side it’s pretty much a requirement.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Actually feel bad for the guys, it’s not their fault the previous Board was afraid of BVZ, RS and JP, and as a result didn’t take the franchise forward. Would be great for the union if they were incorporated into the new setup, maybe as Vodacom or u21 coaches.

  • It would make sense if their contracts wasn’t renewed. New director of rugby, new head coach, new ideas.

  • I Think Reece-edwards and Bashford would thrive under Venter. new and fresh ideas coming from trusted coaches.

  • @R Hayward (Comment 2) : On what basis? Mark Steel is one of the best conditioning coaches in the business. Injuries are part & parcel of the game! As our esteemed Bok coach once said “ballroom dancing is a contact sport, rugby is a collision sport”!

  • @JD (Comment 13) : I can’t really comment because I don’t know the whole story. Conditioning doesn’t seem to be the main reason for Kanko’s exclusion. I imagine it’s more because he was competing with our illustrious captain for the same position in the side… That’s my humble opinion anyway!

  • @Gazman (Comment 15) : Well that’s what they told the whole season and even the reason for his exclusion from the 7′s squad. All I know is their’s some major shit happening in the changing rooms of the Sharks and I think a cleanup is needed.

  • Hallelujah!

It would have been unfair on a new coach to be saddled with these 2. When was the last time you saw any invention and creativity amongst our backs? The type you can attribute to a brainy coach and a well drilled team?

Let’s be honest, what with Van Zyl, Straueli, Plumtree, Bashford and Reece-Edwards having been there for several years (with little real success) it was all getting a bit too pally pally and old boys club-esque mediocre.

    A new broom sweeps clean.

    http://www.superrugby.co.za/rugby/super-rugby/news/130703/A_bolt_from_the_blue_Bulls

“Brendan Venter is supposedly coming in as the director of rugby, but we’re also hearing that he is bemused by that title – he thought he was going to just be a consultant.”
