Keeping the dream alive

In what must surely be the most frustrating season for the Sharks supporters there is now just a very slim ray of sunlight shining through what was a very dark season thus far. There is a slim chance that the Sharks might just, after all, sneak into the play-offs again.

So what must happen for the Sharks to reach the play-offs of super rugby 2013?

Cheetahs – 46 points
The Cheetahs must lose to the Blues without scoring a bonus point. Next week they get 4 bye points that will take them to 50 points.

Crusaders – 51 points
If the Cheetahs manage to beat the Blues all is not lost, but then the Sharks are on very thin ice as the Crusaders must then lose both of their final games against the Chiefs and the Hurricanes without a bonus point to remain on 51 points. Oh yes and then there is the small matter of points deference. Currently the Crusaders are on 103 points, ahead of the Sharks that’s on 35 points that also needs to be wiped-out.

Blues – 44 points
The Blues must beat the Cheetahs this week and next week they must lose against the Chiefs. That will take them to 48-50 points.

Waratahs – 44 points
The Waratahs have only one game left, so win or lose they can’t get enough points to beat the 50 points of the Cheetahs, so they’re not in the running for a play-off spot.

Stormers – 42 points
The Stormers play the Kings this week and the Bulls next week. The Stormers must not score more log points against the same opposition as the Sharks but they can score the same log points as the Sharks have a better point deference than the Stormers. But it’s only 10 points and can easily be wiped out during the two weeks, so to be safe they should not score more log points. This will hopefully take them to not more than 50 points.

The Sharks – 42 points
This is really the only thing that the Sharks control. They must beat the Bulls and next week beat the Kings. Also, they must get at least one bonus point in the two games. That could take them to 51 points and hopefully the sixth spot on the log.

So now comes the big question how will this result in a better outcome than last year? Well in round one of the play-offs, the Sharks will most likely play the Brumbies in Australia and the second game will be the Crusaders to play the Reds. If the Sharks beat the Brumbies they will then play the Chiefs in New Zealand, with the Reds or the Crusaders travelling to South Africa to play the Bulls. So worst case scenario will be that the Sharks would have to travel back to South Africa to play the Bulls or to Australia to play the Reds (who will be coming back from South Africa) or they will be waiting in New Zealand for the Crusaders to travel back from South Africa. All of this would leave the Sharks with a lot less travelling than last year.

So even if only for fun, let’s believe that all of this could happen, as it is not as impossible as we think.

LET’S KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE if only for another week.

  • JD just to confirm, if the Sharks beat the bulls this weekend, it will probably relegate the bulls to 3rd and not second on the log?

  • For SA I actually hope the Bulls beat the screamers and the sharks and get full points so we actually have a chance of getting the cup back in SA.

  • If the Sharks get full points the next games and make the playoffs, we will play the bulls in the quarters, then fly to NZ to play Chiefs then either stay there to play Saders or go to Aus to play Brumbies/Reds

  • Uli Bulls will stay second as they have more victories than Brumbies. Brumbies have a non scoring bye.

  • I dont want the Sharks to reach the playoffs! Rather let the guys rest and freshen up for the CC. We dont need anymore injuries and I just cant see them winning from 6th spot.

  • Be aware that the tie-break for equal points is “number of games won” and then “points difference”

  • @JD (Comment 6) : ok so the wins need to win one game from the two they play? to secure 2nd spot? what about the “free” 4 bye points still allocated to the brunmies? or has that already been given? as the brumbies only need to play the force still.

  • @Uli (Comment 9) : check the log to the right. The “B” column shows how many byes each team has had.

The Cheetahs are the only team who still have a bye outstanding.

  • Uli like Rob said last week and this week the Oz teams don’t get bye point as they played more games to date than the SA & NZ teams.

  • @Uli (Comment 11) : the Bulls need 5 points from their last 2 games to be assured of 2nd place.

  • As a Sharks supporter i obviously hope we manage to sneak into the play-offs. But it does make me question the structure of a tournament where a team can do as badly as the Sharks have done and still have a chance of making the play-offs. Admittedly landing up in 6th spot you have huge abstacles to overcome, as per last year. But still……
