Smit to launch “open era” for Sharks

The Mercury’s Mike Greenaway managed to catch up with new Sharks CEO John Smit yesterday. Among a number of other interesting things, Smit said that his focus for the future would be to make the Sharks an “easy company to deal with” by creating an open environment.

“I would never want to be seen as deceitful, and will have an open door to the media,” Smit goes on to say, which is great news for all fans who have, over the last few years, found the flow of information out of Kings Park to be a little too controlled, and often rather too late as well. It’s that kind of environment that leads to rumours and suspicion, after all and it seems that Smit wants a clean break from that modus operandi. “Sometimes unfortunate things happen, and you just have to take it on the chin. Obviously you want to limit the negative things that happen, but you have to engage with the media.”

The full article is available on IOL here and I encourage you all to read it.

The other things confirmed by Smit were:

- that the immediate focus is on the remaining Super Rugby games. Coaching appointments for the Currie Cup and beyond will be announced after the Sharks’ last Super Rugby game.
- that he intends to spend his first days in office familiarising himself with current processes before deciding which, if any, need to change.
- that he will, of course, be very involved in player retention and recruitment activities, given the time of year
- and that Ryan Kankowski has definitely signed an extension, although he will not be available to play Currie Cup due to Japanese committments

  • All sounds good.

How about an online Q & A where we can ask John some questions?

Type of information I’m looking for is what is his vision in terms of playing style, is he intending on bringing in consultants in attack, defense, and most importantly IMO, skills etc etc

You’ve just got to realise that giving interviews to fan sites is unlikely to be on John’s immediate list of priorities… particularly in the first week! I have already had a brief chat with him, though and he has committed to chatting further. We just need to give him a bit of space.

  • @The Hobbit (Comment 8) : woah – hang on buddy.

Remember that before 1 July, Steph wasn’t even allowed to receive other offers. To be honest, I’m glad it’s taking a while for anything to be announced. If his mind had already been made up, we’d have seen the Bulls announcing the signature already.

Smit is working behind the scenes at the moment, having 1-on-1′s with all the guys. The man has a magic touch… let’s give him a bit of time.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Understood. Where I’m going is that I’d like to see us re-discovering the same playing style as our march on the S15 finals last yr, but in order to get back there we need far greater handling skills than those on display at the moment, better tactical appreciation and of course consistency in performance. Above all else though, we need better leadership. i.e. new captain.
Answers I’m sure will come in good time though.

  • @neilster (Comment 12) : the other thing to bear in mind is that while John is taking control of virtually everything else, I doubt he’ll overrule Brenden on playing style. So it’s actually Dr Venter who will devise the blueprints for what happens on the field.

I don’t know him, but he doesn’t strike me as the sort to do Q&A sessions with fans.
