Strong Bulls named for Sharks

Well, when it comes to their quest to secure top spot on the Super Rugby log, the Bulls clearly aren’t messing around. Frans Ludeke has named a powerful line-up indeed for Saturdays’ Loftus clash against the Sharks.

Last week’s outfit, which dispatched the Kings with ease, was under strength in a few key areas. There’s no such thing this week, with Morne Steyn back at flyhalf in perhaps the most significant change. The loss of Wynand Olivier and Juandre Kruger to French sides looks to have been absorbed with relative ease; Boks Jan Serfontein and JJ Engelbrecht start in midfield, while Flip van der Merwe, Grant Hattingh and Wilhelm Steenkamp provide sufficient steel in the second row.

The Bulls have opted to include a full front-row on the bench, a clear indication that they view the SHarks’ scrum as a point of real strength for the visitors ahead of the game.,

Bulls: 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Dewald Potgieter (captain), 7 Jacques Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Grant Hattingh, 4 Flip vd Merwe, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Dean Greyling
Substitutes: 16 Callie Visagie, 17 Frik Kirsten, 18 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 19 Jono Ross, 20 Jano Vermaak, 21 Jurgen Visser, 22 Morné Mellet

  • @jovner (Comment 2) : I completely agree. If Keegan’s playing, hopefully he has a error reduced game and Lambie needs to have his kicking boots on, because last weeks performance isn’t going to be good enough against this Bulls side. Their centers are what’s really worrying me, there is loads of pace there.

Also, I’ve been reading the site for years now, just first time I’ve commented.

  • The bulls rely heavily on their set piece, if we out scrum them the way we murdered the Blues, and make sure we win our own lineout ball, we’d have won 80% of the battle.

The only other requirement is to catch the ball WHEN they kick those bland up&unders.

Once we’ve got the ball, keep it, that’s why the Bulls struggle against NZ teams, they can’t kick up&unders without the ball which means their only means of attack has been blunted.

    Easy peezy lemon squeezy ;-)

  • I agree, we can take them if we keep it up front, as their backline looks potent.

Alos if Pat hasn’t got his boots on again, there needs to be a quicker switch to Butch, unlike last week.

  • Sharks will keep it tight and try and beat them upfront.

I reckon itll be a low scoring game where the most disciplined side will take it.

Money on Keegan Daniel doing something stupid and gifting them the win.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : Rob, any idea when Sharks name their line up???

Still believe ‘we can’ beat these blokes….but naturally that “never know which Sharks team will pitch” situation is still upon us.

    Will not win if:
    - Kanko is not starting / Keegan is
    - Lambie does not step up
    - Bismarck doesnt start and skipper the side

Another thing that could play a role is if we dont play an openside. Botes has always done well against the Bulls – Marcell is NO OPENSIDE.

I want the boys to win, but still dont want to qualify for play offs…if that makes sense haha

  • Bulls rely on their set pieces. If we put them on the backfoot at scrum time their backline will be less of a threat. If we dominate the mauls/scrums i believe we should take it.

    My loose trio:

    6. Coetzee
    7. Deysel (Shirtless or not)
    8. Alberts

    Kanko on the bench

  • Bulls have good tall locks and line outs is their strenght. Otherwise i would also move Alberts to lock to beef the pack up. Just my opinion.

  • @DBOY (Comment 24) : True, but I’m sure we used Alberts at 4 vs Stormers in the Semi-Final last year. Think they had Etzebeth and Bekker at lock that game so Alberts should be able to hold his own vs the Bulls.

  • @Michael (Comment 25) : in all honesty, the combo is useless! Those two blokes should be able to contest every line-out, yet they don’t. Don’t forget, the Bulls have Matfield, and he is a master where line-outs are concerned.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 10) : Only NZ side Bulls lost to this year was the Crusaders. The rest tried to run – remember Hurricanes at Loftus.

The Bulls have been functioning with bad scrum ball since Guthro left, and it remains their biggest weakpoint, yet this year they win their matches despite their bad scrum.

Adapting almost like Aus did a few years ago when they also had no scrummagers and were under pressure

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 27) : also got to bear in mind that in the final analysis, our overpowering scrum ended up helping us next to nothing against the Blues. Still had to scrap very hard for a desperate win

  • @Michael (Comment 28) : last time we played the Bulls, they read our supposedly “new” lineout like an old book. Franco is the guy who’s devised all the calls and frankly, he’s just not in Victor’s class.

We must remember, though, that the Bulls are without their on-field lineout general (Kruger) and won’t have Spies there either. I guess they’ll go to Flip to call their lineouts this week – can’t say I see Hattingh taking on that responsibility.

  • @robdylan (Comment 29) : I still envy the quality depth at prop the Sharks have.

If you had better luck with injuries, the props would have had more than capable partners in the backs to help them close out any team.

  • If Keegan play Sharks will lose. Sharks need Deysel and Alberts to start with Botes or Kanko (if he’s fit and ready) with Marcell on bench.

  • Does anyone know if Bismarck has been seriously considered as captain? I know he made a cameo last week but is he a serious contender for the captains band? I have nothing against Daniels, just think the guy needs a rest, get his head back in the right space and prove all his critics wrong. Ease the pressure on him a bit.
