Deans discarded

The Wallabies have released Robbie Deans from his two year contract, announcing Ewen McKenzie has his successor.

Deans still had six months left on his two year deal, but will not take the Wallabies into the upcoming Rugby Championship. Instead, McKenzie is expected to be unveiled as the new head coach tomorrow.

McKenzie led the Reds to Super Rugby glory in 2011, and revealed earlier in the year that he would not continue with the Reds beyond this year.

McKenzie apparently saw off a strong challenge from Jake White for the Australian coaching job.

  • WTF!?!?!?!? Yes I was expecting Dean’s axing, but thought they would give Jake the nod…

  • Is this good news for the Sharks? Or would Jake White, Brendan Venter and John Smit be too many big personalities in one union?

  • @R Hayward (Comment 1) :

McKenzie knew months ago he was getting the job, thus his resignation from the Reds..

It was only a matter of time, whether now after the British and Irish Lions tests, or after the Rugby Championship..

  • So is there any posible way that Deans may join Smits Team? Heard this roomer out of Province administration 2 weeks ago, don’t know how they will know? And it must be tempting the hell out of smit…

  • There was talk that Deans would go to the Rebels next season. Hill’s being asked to re-apply and I recollected the Rebels chairman saying some of the applicants were of real high quality.

Other potential options- back to the Crusaders if Blackadder flunks again, or the Canes/Highlanders. Hammett and Joseph haven’t exactly managed to work wonders with their respective teams.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : That’s a shame. Have they had a falling out? Who would be your 1) ideal choice for the head coach role and 2) someone you think is the best, realistic choice?

I actually don’t know, to be honest.

Ideally, I would have liked Venter to be the head coach. Of the South African coaches I wouldn’t mind seeing Jimmy Stonehouse or even Dawie Theron. PDivvy would do well under Venter, Venter could mentor him into a special coach, in my opinion.

If I could choose anybody, I would think about Clive Woodward or perhaps even Graham Henry, but we know that is highly unlikely..

  • I can’t see White coming to the Sharks, not to work under Smit. He also seems really comfortable in Oz. I wouldn’t go for Deans either, he seems to have favorites and we need to lose that mindset. I liked the idea of Mallet but that’s not going to happen so I just hope the right man is put in charge.

  • I’ve always been impressed with Dawie Theron, but I don’t think he’d be an improvement on Plumtree – which, simply, the next appointment has to be. Maybe in tandem with Venter, however, he’ll take the next step up.

The idea of Clive Woodward sounds fun, but he’s probably been out of the game too long? Think a house on the beach and the promise of the Durban sunshine would be enough to convince him? :P

PDivvy? Bit left field – and I don’t know how the average Sharks fan would react to his appointment – but he has the credentials and the record. Plus, he sounds like he knows how to keep a change room smiling.

Look, PDivvy, in tandem with Venter, and Smit’s cool head might be just what the Sharks need.

  • @Uli (Comment 16) :

After 20 years in Durban, it is unlikely that he would leave now?

But should he leave, a possible move to the Kings, seeing as they are out of coaches in a week’s time..

  • @Uli (Comment 16) : @Richard Ferguson (Comment 17) : On IOL, Plum said he won’t coach another SA side, Sharks was his SA team and will also be his SA team.

Highlanders might be a possibility, maybe even Hurricanes for the ITM, that’s where would have gone a few years back (sadly he didn’t  ).

We have a kiwi coach in SA without a Job, and now we have a kiwi coach in Aus without a Job.
