Lambie concern for Sharks

Sharks coach Grant Bashford has confirmed, via the team’s website, that flyhalf Pat Lambie is in serious doubt for this weekend’s final Super Rugby game against the Southern Kings.

Lambie picked up a back injury during Saturday’s defeat at Loftus and looks unlikely to be fit, creating somewhat of a flyhalf poser for the Sharks, given Butch James’s suspension.

There’s a silver lining of sorts, though, in that both Meyer Bosman and JP Pietersen are close to fitness this week and could be included, based on the results of late fitness tests. Either Bosman or Riaan Viljoen could slot in at flyhalf if required, with the lack of options at centre making it more likely that Bosman would be asked to wear the number 12 jersey. In that case, Pietersen, if fit, could slot in at outside centre, as he has done before, with Ludik moving to fullback.

The Sharks could also turn to the likes of Jaco van Tonder (flyhalf, wing or fullback) and Heimar Williams (inside centre) if required.

  • We need to win the last game of the season, the Kings desperately want to add a win over a SA side, and the Sharks is there only hope. Hope we have a back line for this game.

  • also a possibility that the Sharks could look at Zeilinga, I guess…. but with the under 21 season starting this week, I kind of hope they don’t.

  • How far is Burden from fitness? Maybe we could use him at centre  How about this for a back line( including halfbacks) – McLeod,Bosman,Ludik, JPP, Mvovo,Ndungane & Viljoen. Otherwise Viljoen, Bosman,JPP,Mvovo,Ndungane (Robinson) & Ludik, We should have a backline. If JPP & Bosman are still crocked, bring in van Tonder, Williams & Robinson. Is Zeilings fit? We could borrow another Lion – Alwyn Hollenbach – to help out

We need a kicker, so hopefully Bosman.

  • @KILLER SHARK (Comment 6) : Has anyone seen Ludik kick? Just asking. We could use one of the forwards as a kicker as most of them fancy themselves as kickers – Bismarck, Keegan,…… Remember Ollie fancying himself as a kicker. He managed a couple of penalties & conversions (of his own tries)

  • I think we need to get JP fully fit (for Currie cup & Bokke) and not risk him in a nothing game!!!! Give some of our youngsters game time before the Currie cup.

  • @JD (Comment 15) : JP will be in Japan and won’t play for either the Boks or for the Sharks in the CC.

Has anyone else noticed that since last year, Lambie’s fantastic goal kicking and his excellent running and line breaking ability have not appeared in the same game at all. Just think, for most of this season he has been on song with the boot and not been into his running much. Then you have games like this and last weeks, and against the Rebels, where he has run brilliantly, but missed most of his kicks. It makes you think that he isn’t being managed very well and isn’t entirely mentally fit.

  • I woiuld go with Zeilinga here. The boy has loads of potential, he needs to make the step up sooner rather than later and this is the perfect opportunity. having said that, I hope Pat is cleared to play against the Kings.

  • Just maybe someone ask the Bulls what medicine they gave to Morne to cure his kicking problems, then give some of it to Pat

  • Ja nee laat Lambie bietjie rus man – the man needs it  . Let Zeilinga start – together with some other young guys like Heimar and this van Tonder bloke. Come on we don’t have anything to lose ;-)

  • Not sure if I buy this ” injured” story.

After that kicking display surely he feels too embarrassed to run out in the Sharktank so he asked for the rest?

  • This last game is definitely not a no-pressure game.

It will destroy these young players if they were to be part of the first SA team to lose to the Kings.

No no, Sharks need the strongest possible team to end this miserable campaign with the slightest glimmer of hope.

  • What is wrong with you people. We got the best player in the Vodacom Cup n the best u21 Currie Cup player from last year. The Sharks are stale & the Currie Cup will be used for the future. Give these kids Super Rugby experience and they can hit the Currie Cup running. When has Lambie NOT played this season? To not rotate them would do a disservice to both players
