Odwa set for fullback shift

Injury to Pat Lambie and suspension to Butch James should result in a reshuffle amongst the Sharks back for this weekend’s final Super Rugby game of the season.

Coach Hugh Reece-Edwards has confirmed that Riaan Viljoen is the man likely to step into the flyhalf role, with Odwa Ndungane moving back to fullback, rather than Louis Ludik, as was widely expected to be the case.

Ludik should continue at centre, outside Meyer Bosman, who returns from injury this week. Ndungane’s place on the wing will go to JP Pietersen, also fit to play at last.

It’s not anticipated that there will be many changes to the pack when the Sharks team is confirmed tomorrow.

  • Weird. I would have thought that some youngsters could get a run?

  • @PTAShark (Comment 6) : bear in mind that the u21 season kicks off this weekend. Vital to have a good campaign there, I’d think.

I’d much rather Zeilinga and Fisher got those boys off to a winning start than played in a nothing Super Rugby game.

  • The u21s are playing against Border. If we don’t have the depth to lose 1 or 2 youngsters to the senior squad with Border as our opposition, we might as well shut down the Sharks Academy

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 8) : actually, Border have a reasonable side at u21 level…. it’s just the seniors that suck.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : Agreed; decent they are. The Bulls or WP u21 they are not. Let’s remember that Rob du Preez and Andre Esterhuizen are both more than capable replacements for Fred & Fisher

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 10) : I agree.

Dont think HRE and Bashy will want to lose their last game, however.(This is their last ?) So we may see them persist with a bunch of senior players.

  • Why is the KZN Craven week team so woefully “undercooked” (stronger words should probably suffice).

Losing to the Bulls 40(-ish) – something; and today losing to the Pumas 40(-ish) – something.

Then we wonder why local players aren’t recruited by the Sharks or can’t make it into the senior side.

Considering Prinsloo, Viljoen, and possibly Ludik are leaving, we need somebody to play fullback!

  • FireTheLooser maybe it’s because the coaches and selecters worry more about how many players their school have than picking the best players. When doing marketing for a school it’s always advertised how many craven week players they had without giving the Craven week results e.g. at ADG School we had 7 players in the Craven week A-team but never that the side lost all their games with 40 odd points.
