Alberts benched as Sharks make changes

Willem Alberts, a slight injury doubt during the week, will play off the bench for the Sharks this week, with Keegan Daniel returning to captain the side from the number 8 jersey.

That switch, which sees Jean Deysel retained at blind side flank, is the only change to the starting pack of forwards which did so well for most of last week’s match against the Bulls. The bench is also a familiar one, with Alberts joining Jacques Botes as loose forward replacements.

It’s amongst the backs, though, that things have changed significantly. Riaan Viljoen comes in at flyhalf for suspended Butch James, while Meyer Bosman starts at inside centre for the injured Pat Lambie. JP Pietersen returns at right wing, with Odwa Ndungane shifting into the fullback position.

The need to include additional flyhalf cover on the bench sees Fred Zeilinga come into the squad for the first time, with the under 21 player set to make his Super Rugby debut off the bench. The return of Pietersen means, alas, that Jaco van Tonder drops out this week.

  • I like this team, and I think they ahve done the right thing by letting Daniel start and captain the last game of the season, especially if Alberts is not 100%

Will be interesting to see how the backline doe, lets hope viljoen gets the backline going. Hope they go out there and just enjoy a good game of rugby.

  • @stevovo (Comment 6) : I agree with you.

Giving Daniel the armband back was the right thing to do. Just wish they’d found a spot for Kankowski

  • Okay a bit skeptical, but a good team. Still think that we should play ludik at full back, his not as effective at centre as he is at fullback though. Jp could have covered the outside centre position, he played there last year after all

  • On the other hand, they playing EP’s B-side. My concern is not for the game itself, but playing ludik out of position when we’re trying to retain his services. If there’s any doubts about moving, this continual out of position play makes it much easier for those doubts to clear up.

  • Hey guys been a long time lurker and finally posting

I have to ask why Jannie is playing in this game. Its basically a nothing game and to me seems a good game to give him an extra week off?

  • @Half-Pint (Comment 11) : howzit…. welcome :)

Agree… seems dof to play him when it’s not necessary.

Then again, Sharks are in contract negotiations with Jannie, so maybe very concerned about annoying him?

  • And this is the reason the two coaches must go because in the 3 games they just kept on going with the brainless team selections!!!!! Sharks will not keep Ludik if they carry on like this!!!!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) :
    Agreed.

Although might be a little unwise considering Kanko hasn’t played the 15 man game for months and has one foot on the plane to Japan.

  • Agree that JP at 13, Odwa 14 and Ludik 15 makes more sense. But it still made me wonder….even though the Sharks have let go of Gouws, Riaan and probably Louis as well, we can still say that we have JPP, Frans, Pat and Odwa to cover fullback. Albeit some of those players should not be stuffed about like that. JPP of to Japan yes, but thinking ahead to S15. Just a lose wandering thought

  • @JD (Comment 13) : Ok I’m not sure if I misunderstood, I thought that Ludik was definitely leaving. Are they in negotiations with him? I really hope we keep him as I always feel more at ease with him at 15. He should have had a shot in the green and gold by now thou

  • @JD (Comment 19) : ay, seems that #13 jersey really made it easy for him to leave. A real crying shame. Probably our best full back since percy lol. Oh well. No use crying over spilled milk. Whose next? Gouws?? After he returns from greeks ofcoz
