Disappointing end to debut season

The Southern Kings ended their Super Rugby debut season on a low note after losing to the Sharks 13 – 58 in Durban on the weekend.

The outcome of the match would not have changed anything in the competition, but rather give the Sharks some confidence as they start preparing for the Currie Cup. The Southern Kings on the other hand had already shifted their focused on the promotion / relegation matches against the Lions. With numerous changes to their side the match could have been more of an opportunity to test the depth within the squad.

Director of Rugby, Alan Solomons said the team, which lacked a number of key players, had not played well, which showed in the final score of 58 to 13.

“We played very poorly. We made a lot of errors and The Sharks capitalised on those errors, which resulted in points,” said Solomons.

Solomons pointed out, the errors ran throughout the entire match. They were poor in their set pieces, particularly the line outs and were also unable to stop the Sharks momentum.

“Our ability to stem their mauls was extremely poor. Three of their first four tries resulted from their driving maul, which we were unable to stem.”

“We also failed to stop their momentum. They are a momentum side. We just gave them enormous yards. If you fail to stop them and allow them to build up momentum, then you’re in big trouble,” he said.

Solomons also said the game had to be seen in context of the upcoming promotion / relegation matches against the Lions.

“I would say you have to see this game in context, for us, our focus after the Stormers was firmly on the promotion / relegation matches, and a lot of the guys who played on the weekend, haven’t had much Super Rugby game time and have not played together as a combination. All those factors came into the mix, but we have had to look at the bigger picture,” he said.

“The players will be given a break until Thursday morning, when we will regroup and start preparations for the first promotion relegation game, which is on the 26th of July,” he said.

The Southern Kings will face the Lions in the first of two home and way promotion / relegation matches at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday the 26th of July.

  • Yep, we performed admirably for the majority of the season, towards the end of the season, the intensity of the competition caught up with us. Low points of the season definitely the Waratahs game along with not getting 1 over 1 of our South African counterparts. Hopefully now we can win our promo-relegation games. Gonna be tough

  • @Ludz (Comment 3) : @pierre_mackie (Comment 4) : I’m sure you will take a win over the Lions over a win against the other SA Super rugby teams. Good luck for the Promo/relegation games.
