It’s our final installment of a South African team of the week for this Super Rugby season and as the 4 South African teams that played last weekend played against each other it was pretty clear that it would be the Stormers and the Sharks who would dominate this last installment.

The Sharks took care of their weaker opposition in style, but given the fact that the Stomers outplayed the South African conference winners, they were always going to dominate this weeks team of the week.

15. Odwa Ndugane

This was his best game in a long time and it wasn’t that he shone with the rest of the backs, (because as with most of the season the Sharks’ backline looked all over the place most of the time), but Odwa looked like he felt right at home in his new position.

14. Bryan Habana

Habana was given a great send off by his team and he gave his team another one of his best games.

13. Juan de Jongh

He’s still not at his best form and was actually pretty quiet among a few great performers, but played his part in a dangerous looking backline.

12. Jean de Villiers

Top class, one can’t blame any coach for wanting to keep this guy around for as long as possible.

11. Lwazi Mvovo

Lwazi’s forms seems to improve with every game since his return from injury.

10. Gary van Aswegen

If this is what this kid can do in every game, the Stormers might not want Jantjies to stick around. Too bad he seems to be one of those players who’s very injury prone.

9. Louis Schreuder

A clean performance from the scrumhalf gets him the nod this week.

8. Dewald Potgieter

He battled until the very end, but couldn’t get his team over the line against a very committed Stormers team.

7. Jean Deysel

Defenders bounce off of him like rubber balls. He’s in the shape of his life. Now if he can just stay that way for an extended period of time.

6. Deon Fourie

He’s just better as a loose forward. He’s proven that over and over again.

5. Franco van der Merwe

Another solid performance from the big man who played every single game for the Sharks this season. Considering the Sharks had 24 different players who were injured at some point during this season, just being available is a feat on its own.

4. Eben Etzebeth

There’s not much more to say about him.

3. Brok Harris

A Stormers prop? I know. The horror, but given that the Bulls struggled at scrum time and this affected their chances of gaining any momentum, it had to go to Brok.

2. Scarra Ntubeni

Last year with the chances of Deon Fourie moving on to Europe looking likely, I predicted that Ntubeni would flourish for the Stormers, with Fourie staying and injuries he’s had little chance to do that. We’ll see if he gets more opportunities in the Currie Cup, I still say watch out for this kid.

1. Beast Mtawarira

Who doesn’t love it when the Beast side steps and darts around players. Sure he can scrum, but that’s what we love about him.

15. Charles Piutau, 14. Cooper Vuna, 13. Tom English, 12. Jean de Villiers, 11. Nick Cummins, 10. Gary van Aswegen, 9. Andy Ellis, 8. Victor Vito, 7. Jean Deysel, 6. Deon Fourie, 5. Cadeyrn Neville, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 3. Ben Tameifuna, 2. Scarra Ntubeni, 1. Beast Mtawarira

  • Deysel should get a look in with the Boks…
Experienced campaigner and surely what Meyer looks for in a loose forward?

  • I love Odwa at 15. I think Deysel should get consideration for the Bok 7 jersey with Alberts at 8. I think that Mvovo was great despite not scoring, and I was a little disappointed with Pietersen. I also think it’s hard to ever say that anybody (except maybe Strauss) had a better game than Bissie. Lastly, I love how van der Merwe has shone in these last weeks.
