Battle lines drawn for Ebersohn, van Zyl

Despite assurances form Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske that he is confident both Rob Ebersohn and Piet van Zyl will accept the contract extensions in front of them, both players are being strongly linked with an exit from Bloemfontein.

Ebersohn is believed to have agreed a move to Montpellier in France, one which he subsequently got cold feet about when receiving a belated Springbok training camp call-up. That pendulum seems to have swung back the other way now, though. Heyneke Meyer has made it rather clear that the likes of Jan Serfontein and JJ Engelbrecht are next-in-line at centre, leaving Ebersohn, we understand, to attempt a hasty resurrection of his French plans. I would imagine there would be some “stuff” to sort out on that side, given the way in which the initial agreement was reneged upon, but the smart money seems to be on that move happening nevertheless.

Van Zyl, on the other hand, appears to be a Bulls target, with the Pretoria union looking at him to replace the departing Jano Vermaak. There’s obviously no confirmation of this, but it’s likely that they are offering him significantly more than the Cheetahs can match, making a move likely.

  • Finally some transfer stuff coming through… Weren’t the cheetahs & WP suppose to hold media conferences earlier in the week to “unveil” their signings?
Or did they find it pointless as the media already know mostly all?

  • @R Hayward (Comment 1) : Very true, plus the fact that the contracting window only closes on 31 October makes media conferences in July all kinds of stupid. Another retardation of Super Rugby: Guys are signing contracts to leave the provinces that they haven’t even started playing Currie Cup for!

  • Hoping the meeting The Sharks are having with Du Toit this morning goes well!! If we lose him it will be an absolute disaster!! It’s not like we have quality locks lying around! and he is already world class…

Even more so if we lose him to the bulls!! :???:

  • @AlienArmy (Comment 7) : to keep du toit at similar money to he’s being offered by the Bulls, we’d probably need to lose the Dup’s or Alberts…

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : I hope we can hang onto him. I’d love to see him and Alberts pack down as locks together with a loose trio of Deysel, Kleinhans and Kanko. It would give us 2 ball carrying locks and a balanced loose trio.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : Which would you prefer though? Seeing as we’re a bit thin on the ground when it comes to lock…but losing the brothers or Alberts would be as bad!

Deysel is playing well, so losing Alberts MIGHT be offset by that somewhat…but with the style of play they are expected to employ, how long will Deysel last if he has to carry the workload by himself

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : Rob have U got a profile on that Stander Loosie that played the Lions…he looked like a very good player. and I think he might be a bit of a wild card to come through the ranks.he has a funny name…I HOPE WE HAVE a magic trick up the sleeve this morning…Matfield had a big part to play here, if Du Toit moves on.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) :

Rob, were the bulls not cutting guys contracts when they came up for renewal, as they did not have the budget, due to all the age group players they had contracted?

    If so, what’s changed?

  • @Bump (Comment 24) : what has changed is that so many of those guys left…

Think about it… who are the real “big money” players left on hte Bulls’ books? Spies, Hougaard…. who else?

I’m sure they’re paying Botha, Serfontein, Engelbrecht a lot, bug they’ve lost real top-earners in Chilli, Zane, Wynand, Vermaak, Kruger… also both Potgieters… got to free up some budget

  • @robdylan (Comment 27) : True, but if they sign PsdT at this large price tag, they’ve hopefully left with very little for future acquisitions. Not that I want PstD to leave.

Strange how Bulls supporters always claimed that they developed their own stars.
