Andries Strauss out for promotion/relegation

The Southern Kings suffered a huge blow as they prepare for their promotion / relegation match against the Lions next Friday in Port Elizabeth.

Director of Rugby, Alan Solomons, confirmed that captain Andries Strauss had broken his left hand during practice this morning.

“It is just an unfortunate accident; he landed awkwardly on his hand,” said Solomons.

“Andries is really gutted that he will not be able to take part in either of the promotion relegation games,” said Solomons.

Strauss took over the captaincy from Luke Watson after he (Watson) was side lined for most of the Super Rugby season. Strauss has been the heart of the Kings midfield and his leadership has been exemplary throughout the season.

Steven Sykes who captained the side against the Sharks will probably take over from Strauss in the two promotion / relegation games against the Lions.

  • Going to be two great games! Huge blow to the Kings that Strauss is out.

I wonder how much fuller the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium is going to be compared to Ellis park.

  • @Lassy_lion (Comment 8) : Ja, you don’t know what you have ’till it’s gone. I think the Lions have come to appreciate the opportunity to play SR and will do whatever it takes to get back into SR, and most importantly stay there.

I bet SARU is secretly playing for a Kings win, because they still haven’t figured out another way to keep the Kings in SR.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 13) : That is true…This was an awfull year watching all the others play Super Rugby and your team not being there….

I am just glad that the Lions did not agree to join with the Kings because acording to me they never even deserved to be there….

  • I think that SA rugby made a huge mistake and set up both teams to fail. Kings did not have time to sign top players and sponsor with only a 1 year super rugby spot. Lions had no time to plan other ways to get money and game time for players and sponsors so they lost both. No sponsor or top player will be willing to sign for only a 1 year deal, so both teams are set to fail in super rugby.

  • I am so sick and tired of reading the same crap all over the net. the 2013 story of who should and should not have played and why…..why dont we try change the direction that the sun comes up from? SA was always gonna have a problem but typical dumb asses who run the sport cant look a few years down the line….10 becomes 12 become 14 becomes 15 becomes 18…..soon we will see worldcup format of 20 or 24 and still, griqwas will be upset for not playing seeing that the pumas are. #lionskingsbattlesucks
