Sharks close in on du Plessis signature

Intrepid newshound Jean Smyth, writing for EWN Sport, has managed to get Sharks boss John Smit on the record regarding the ongoing contract negotiations with the du Plessis brother, Bismarck and Jannie.

According to Smit, Jannie has already agreed terms with the Sharks and is assumed to have signed a contract extension – Smit’s wording being that they have “tied him down” – while they have managed to make an agreement with Bismarck as well.

The hooker, however, seeks additional clarity from SA Rugby in terms of his future at national level before finally putting pen to paper with the Sharks, thus finally and firmly rejecting the myriad of lucrative French offers also on the table. The issue appears to be the length of his Springbok contract; it’s obviously impossible for the Sharks to match the French offers like-for-like, but typically, together with earnings from his Springbok commitments, as well as endorsements and the like, a guy like Bismarck could make an amount that is almost comparable.

With the French (and the Sharks) no doubt offering at least two years, Bismarck is obviously keen to have some sort of assurance that he will be in line for a similar Bok contract again next year, assuming form. Smit’s assumption is that SA Rugby, who have always shown great faith in Bismarck in the past, are very likely to play along.

“I’ll be lying if I say he [Bismarck] has signed, but we have come to an agreement, an agreement we are both happy with,” Smit told EWN.

  • Although they sometimes make silly mistakes on the field at times, they seem to be very together of the field.

I fully understand that they both will talk with the Sprinboks first before making a decision. Bismark and Jannie are pushing 30 now, so if they wanted to go oversess, now would be the time.

But I was thinking about it, and if I was PSDT, I think I would take a pay CUT to get coached by Victor Matfield at this stage of my career. And all the rumours seem to suggest that it won’t be a pay cut at all.

  • Psdt, should consider way more than his pay check here. There will be time in the future to get more. A two year contract that detracts from your progress as a player and therefore possibly your future offers, would not be a good one at this stage.

I agree that playing under Vic Matfield as a young lock must be very tempting, but the Bulls have had a few promising locks come and go in the past few years, because they have too many options and aren’t willing to give youngsters time to settle, as they can just fall back on their “safer” options.

IMO, he would play a more important role at the Sharks and looking at our lock stocks, especially 5 locks, he could have a long and promising future with the Sharks. Also, if he has a better guarantee of starting with his union, he’d have a better guarantee of making the Bok team.

On the other hand the best guarantee of making the Bok team these days are insuring your union wears blue, so maybe the only way he’ll stay is if the Sharks make him an offer he can’t refuse.

Who would want to make a move to Pretoria if you can live in Umghlaga, anyway.

  • Very happy if we can hang onto the Dups! If things should work that way and we end up losing Du Toit, it would be very sad, but also not the end of the world…

Our scrum is extremely strong, and would remain so without him. If we don’t spend a fortune on keeping him, it opens up the possibility to contract some other prospects or even two. Hope it does not come to that though, as a Du Toit Bresler combo sounds good to me, and scrumming behind the dups and Beast…

Also, every article hints at the Matfield factor could swing his decision, but he got to the bok team without Matfield…

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 13) : you are spot on

if PS stays in Durban, then suddenly Eben Etzebeth is the “odd man out” as the only member of the Boks tight five not playing in Durban.

If PS goes to the Bulls, he will be the only Springbok (worse, the only Springbok quality player) in their tight five.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : Are we hoping that Psdt or someone close to him reads these comments and then cannot come too any other conclusion, but that resigning with the Sharks are the best possible option. ;-)

To me the biggest factor for him should be how many players they have signed, that was the same age as he is now, that also showed immense promise that we are just never hearing of again.

Pstd is a open-style type of player, I don’t see that his style suites the Bulls and unless he adapts and change the thing about him that probably stand out the most, at this stage, they will probably not give him much game time.

They signed Grant Hattingh from the Lions, who showed plenty of promise in open play when he played for them, but has hardly been used by the Bulls since signing him last year. Not that Hattingh looked like much when paying for the Bulls, but that’s my point exactly. They show promise, then they go to play behind a week Bulls pack and they disappear.

It could be different for Psdt, but I wouldn’t take the chance if I was him.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 27) : we need to think about this one very carefully.

I don’t know what Franco’s contractual status is… would think that if the Lions lose to the Kings, he’d definitely be able to leave.

The problem here is that Heyneke Meyer has convinced PSdT he’s a 5…. while Franco is also very definitely a 5. That makes me think the Sharks will only seriously consider picking up Franco if PS does leave, although as Smitty said, “you can never be too stocked with tight forwards”. PS, Franco, Marco Wentzel and Peet Marais kind of seems like overkill at 5, though.

  • @robdylan (Comment 36) : The problem for the Kings, inmo, is that they concentrated mainly on defense throughout their season, which means they will probably not be able to score enough points against a team who has been known as one of the weaker defending teams.

The Lions should be able to crack their defense with the way they usually play and once you build up a lead, it frustrates an opposition whose main objective is to keep the scoring low.

It will be interesting to see, but I also think the Lions should take it.

If they wanted to rest players it should have been a few weeks earlier, then play the strongest team for the last week or two, then use the two weeks preparation that they have to face the lions.
