Too little, too late for under 21s

The Sharks under 21 side were made to pay for a poor start against Lions on Friday and despite a good comeback as the game progressed, ultimately succumbed to a 17-24 defeat at Kings Park.

The team was severely disrupted in the build-up, with both hookers, Franco Marais and Greg Bauer, forced to cry off at short notice after a freak clash of heads at captain’s practice on Thursday. Reserve lock Wade Elliot also withdrew late in the day and it was a disjointed side that took the field under stand-in captain Guy Alexander on Friday afternoon. As was feared, the line-outs in particular were messy given the loss of Marais and the Lions forward took advantage and dominated the early proceedings.

The Lions scored two tries in the first half, which together with a penalty saw the Sharks staring down the barrel of a very big defeat, as they trailed 0-17 just before half time. Loose-head prop Allan Dell barreled over for a try just before the break, though, with Rob du Preez converting to give the Sharks a sniff at 7-17.

The lions hit back shortly after the break, though, with a score that ultimately snuffed out any hope of a Sharks win, although Dell did well to score a second not long afterwards and restore the ten-point deficit. A long penalty from replacement Brendan Cope brought the Sharks within 7 late in the game, but despite their dominance at that stage, there simply wan’t enough time left to erode the Lion’s lead any further.

Sharks U21 17 (7) – Tries: Allan Dell (2). Conversions: Brendan Cope, Robert du Preez. Penalty: Brendan Cope.

MTN Golden Lions U21 24 (17) – Tries: Gideon Meiring, Henri Boshoff, Ruaan Lerm. Conversions: Jaco van der Walt, Marais Schmidt (2). Penalty: Schmidt.

  • That Cope has to be the most underrated age-group flyhalf in the country. He played in so many average DHS teams and still managed to shine. Give him some decent ball & he could cause havoc

  • Dont think the best 15 in each position where on the field….
choose players by performance not reputation.
