Western Province coach Allister Coetzee has confirmed that Deon Fourie will captain this year’s Currie Cup side as they look to defend their title, according to Rugby365.

With regular Super Rugby captain Jean de Villiers also the Springbok captain, it is a certainty that the veteran centre will miss out on the entire campaign and like a number of other teams, such as the Sharks and the Bulls, WP will be forced to field a weakened side this year as the loss of players to both the Boks and overseas clubs takes its toll. Province have been boosted by the return to fitness of key players in Duane Vermeulen and Michael Rhodes, but only the latter is likely to player Currie Cup rugby. Vermeulen is a contracted Springbok and likely to be called straight into Rugby Championship duty in a few weeks’ time.

Coetzee goes on to say that a number of fringe players from the local club scene will be given the opportunity to stake a claim during the Currie Cup as a result. One of these will be former Sharks and WP scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann, who has been out of the game for an extended period thanks to injury. Another up-and-comer likely to see action is Junior Bok fullback Cheslin Kolbe; with Joe Pietersen released to join Bayonne in France and Gerhard van den Heever on his way to Ireland after the season, Province need to blood new talent in the back three and the young Kolbe has a great chance to show that he deserves a Super Rugby shot next year.

Jaco Taute, who has signed a contract with WP, remains sidelined with a knee injury.

  • Didn’t know vd Heever was leaving – another player who never quite reached his potential.

  • Keen to see Kolbe hey and even if he struggles a bit, I hope people don’t write him off, he’s 20, got plenty of time to grow into senior rugby
