Cheetahs pick up another Bulls centre

Various media sources have confirmed the long-rumoured departure of Bulls centre Francois Venter to the Cheetahs. The former Junior Bok 12 will return to his native Bloemfontein in time for Super Rugby next year, where he is expected to come in as a straight replacement for the Montpellier-bound Robert Ebersohn.

It’s becoming something of a trend for the Cheetahs to pick up midfielders from their Pretoria rivals; last year they offered Johann Sadie a shot at redemption after his big-money move to the Bulls turned out to be nothing short of career suicide. Also announced earlier this year was the signature of Piet Lindeque, who despite his few loan appearances for the Sharks in Super Rugby was most recently contracted to the Bulls – or Tukkies, at the very least.

Lindeque and Venter, ironically, played together at Grey College where they were highly rated as a combination. It’s probably fair to say that neither has quite managed to capitalise on that junior potential as yet, but perhaps reunited as a pairing back in the town where their happiest rugby memories were forged, they could finally make the big step up.

  • Well the Bulls poached him first lol. This could be a very good signing by the Cheetahs. He has played with Sadie, and they could become very good indeed.

I also read that Juan Smith’s Achilles op was a resounding success, and that he is keen to play again. That could make my day. Maybe use him as a 5 lock with Lood playing 4

  • @jovner (Comment 3) : Makes sense as I don’t believe that his body would handle the stress of Super rugby, much better idea to get a big pay day in Japan, with less risk of injury.

  • @jovner (Comment 3) : Well until it is signed and sealed, I will hope he stays. I wouldn’t begrudge him a big pay check with the Japs, but would really love to see him run out in Cheetah colours again. He is one of my all time favourite players, and a real legend.

  • Happy Francois Venter has seen the light. Chris Bosch the Bulls U21 centre and William Small-Smith should also leave Pretoria

Bulls centres will be Engelbrecht, Serfontein, van Rensburg and Swanepoel

Thought Ulrich Beyers might get used at centre now that there are no established back-ups to Serfontein and Engelbrecht.

Having 2 21 year olds to back up another 21 year old (Serfontein) is not ideal!!

  • @slammerboy (Comment 24) : Truly hope not. At one stage there was a shortage of good centres – other than Olivier, and it seems asif they just bought young guys from everywhere to fill that void. Now we have too many who are more or less the same age – 19-24

Apparently Trompie’s playing club rugby in Durban.

The biggest loss to the Sharks was Nanyak Dala. Boks loss was Canada’s gain.

  • @JD (Comment 35) : I think JS is not allowed to play his natural game. He will be turned into a robotic bosh merchant by the Bulls therefore killing all creativity in his play. I think he is an outside centre but will continue at 12 thanks to the current form of JJ

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 2) : KingCheetah\Cheetah4eva – you must be stoked by this news :) .I wish Robert Ebersohn would stay as I rate his vision and ability to create space for his outside backs. I look forward to seeing what Venter can do with an extended run in the Cheetahs SR team and I hope this move will will benefit him in the same way that it has benefited Sadie.

  • @braddfidd (Comment 38) : Yeah, I am a bit sad to see Ebersohn go, but I understand his reasoning. Makes good bucks, and maybe come back and challenge for a bok berth.

I think Vente will flourish at the Cheetahs. I see they have also signed a glenwood old boy, and Junior Bok TH prop of 2011 John Roy Jenkinson for two years.

Props now for CC and Super 15:

LH: Nyakane, Wian du Preez and Caylib Oosthuizen
TH: Coenie, Rossouw de Klerk, Adriaanse (S15), Luan de Bruin (Junior Bok2012) and John Roy Jenkinson
