Venter clarifies Sharks role

In a wide-ranging interview with SuperSport’s Gavin Rich, new Sharks Director of Rugby Brendan Venter has gone on record for the first time about his role in Durban.

We do not have permission to reproduce the article here, so please read it in full on the SuperSport website. We’ll address a few highlights here.

Among the more interesting thing that Venter had to say are the following:

- that he intends to stay out of the spotlight, as the result of some bad experiences with unethical media in the past. Brad Macleod-Henderson is the man who will be groomed as the head coach.
- that he will concentrate on creating a special environment that allows players to develop as people, rather than simply as rugby players
- that his decision to take on the Sharks challenge was driven by what he knows of John Smit as a person
- and that he doesn’t feel there’s all that much wrong with the current Sharks game plan, but that he wishes to see more rotation

Have to say Rob, I’m really excited about what Smit and Venter are planning for the Sharks. A team with their heads screwed on right is a beautiful thing to behold.

Lol, aint that the truth! His relationship with the British media was fraught at best!
    Venter doesnt suffer fools lightly.

It sounds like he is using a lot of what was done at Saracens, which in itself is no bad thing.
Venter, along with several other people it must said, took Saracens from mediocre to top of the pile within two or three seasons. It was a magnificent turnaround, considering they started with very little.

  • ” he will be taking on a background role as a mentor to new head coach Brad McLeod-Henderson and his assistant Sean Everitt, and as an adviser to Smit.” thought there was no head coach?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : Read it, if only to see what a bitter person “the mole” is.

Here is the link http://www.rapport.co.za/Sport/Rugby/Smittie-se-Haaie-lyk-soos-spartelende-sardientjies-20130720 , note he does not mention PSdT re-signing in the article.

Also on ‘Die Mol” to my knowledge he is not Rudolf Lake but Louis de Villiers.
Rudolf Lake himself is a special case. It was him that phoned in to SuperRugby on Kyknet, speech impeded, and went about using the programme as a platform to get Jake White fired. Joost lost it that day with Lake and sent him packing.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 9) : i should change my name to Hobbit PI. he mentions it a few times but I am certain Sean Everrit has himself clarified that there is a back line and forwards coach and Venter?

Lake is based in the North, I thought Mol is Cape based.

  • There is so many adjectives which I would like to add to ”Die Mol”. But changing the M for a Dr would still work best.

  • Love the part about recreating the special vibe that was the team of the 90s! Spine-tingling stuff.
Interesting to hear that he doesn’t think much is wrong with the way the Sharks have been playing, yet in his column for supersport he said on a few occasions that he couldn’t work out what we were trying to do…
Having said that he is a man of integrity, and he is showing respect to the outgoing coaching staff.

  • The contrast is that now there is talk of a head coach yet again.
It seems as though everyone has their own opinion of what their job descriptions are at the Tank… that to me is a bit worrying yet again. Nothing seems to be clear and cast in stone.

  • I hope Venter is not a surgeon (as some have reported), if he is I hope his medical insurance is up to date. The guy is going to be knackered after just his first month in the job.

  • I reckon the biggest problem with ‘die mol’ is that he refers to himself in the third person.

Any idiot who thinks thats the way to write an article doesnt deserve to even have it read!
