Graaff adds bite to Sharks backline

The Sharks have moved to strengthen their backline ahead of the upcoming Currie Cup season by picking up the services of Griffons utility back Hansie Graaff, Sharksworld has learned.

The 23-year old Graaff – christened “Johannes Petrus Jacobus” – is a large lad indeed at 1.91m and a shade under 100kg and becomes the second alumnus of Wonderboom Hoër in the Sharks squad, with Charl McLeod also an old boy of that fine Pretoria North academic institution. Hansie made a name for himself playing for the TUT Vikings in the Varsity Cup between 2010 and 2012, before joining the Griffons for the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup first Division last year.

One could argue that his first Currie Cup seasons was a relatively good one; Graaff won the First Division Player of the Year Award as he went on to establish himself as a versatile yet dependable back, capable virtually anywhere from flyhalf through to fullback. It was his deadly goal-kicking boot, though, that was more often than not the difference between winning and losing for the Griffons and Graaff came within a whisker of making the Cheetahs Super Rugby squad this year on the strength of that claim. Few Stormers fans will forget the last-second Graaff penalty that consigned their team to defeat in a pre-Super Rugby warm-up game in Bloemfontein in February this year.

Incoming Sharks Director of Rugby Brendan Venter is keen to move away from the “first team/second team” mentality that seems to beset South African rugby, insisting that the squad system employed by Northern Hemisphere clubs is the right way to manage players and win trophies. With the emphasis firmly on rotation this campaign, expect to see Graaff play a big role as an alternate to the likes of Fred Zeilinga and Butch James at flyhalf, as well as Louis Ludik and Jaco van Tonder at fullback.

Welcome to the Sharks Hansie – let’s hope your stay proves to be a long and successful one.

  • Sounds like a solid signing! Welcome to the Sharks Graaff!

One player who doesn’t need a nickname, Graaff covers it!

  • My only hope with this ‘squad system’ Venter speaks about, is that it doesn’t come at the expense of building strong partnerships in particular positions.
Ie, if 2 centres are playing particularly well together and have a good understanding of each other, then there is no reason to rotate them just because the squad system says you must.

  • Come on Rob, you can’t tease us like that. Now I’m gonna walk around the whole time wondering who the hell we signed  But please let it be a decent loose head prop so that Chumlee can rather go play waterboy or some position like that

  • @John Galt (Comment 5) : Rotation works if you have a playing pattern both on attack and defence. Each player knows his role in that pattern. What then separates one player from the other is the ability to take your opportunities within that pattern. I think we should expect a Sharks team that shows us what they are trying to do on the field not this aimless rugby we’ve seen lately.
