Southern Kings named for second promotion/relegation battle

The Southern Kings have made three changes to their starting line up to face the Lions in the final promotion/relegation match at Ellis Park on Saturday. The Lions will go into the match with a 7 point lead after beating the Kings 26 – 19 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium a week ago.

All of the three changes are amongst the backs. Scott van Breda comes in for Marcello Sampson on the right wing, with Hadleigh Parkes moving to left wing. Waylon Murray replaces Shane Gates at number 12. The last change comes in the all important pivot position, with George Whitehead replacing the injured Demetri Catrakilis. Many would probably look at Whitehead as the villain after he missed quite an easy conversion last week, but Saturday is a new game and a possible opportunity for Whitehead to return home as a hero.

Wesley Dunlop and Gates are the only changes on the bench, with Dunlop replacing Whitehead and Gates making way for Murray in the starting line up.

The Kings will have a tremendous mountain to climb, but not an impossible one; they do however need to beat the Lions with a bonus point (scoring four tries) or win by an 8 + points difference. Whichever way it goes it will be two sides playing for survival in front of a sell out crowd.

Southern Kings
15 SP Marais 14 Scott van Breda 13 Ronnie Cooke (VC) 12 Waylon Murray 11 Hadleigh Parkes 10 George Whitehead 9 Shaun Venter 8 Jacques Engelbrecht 7 Wimpie van der Walt 6 Cornell du Preez 5 David Bulbring 4 Darron Nell (C) 3 Kevin Buys 2 Bandise Maku 1 Schalk Ferreira
Replacements
16 Charl du Plessis 17 Hannes Franklin 18 Steven Sykes 19 Devin Oosthuizen 20 Nicolas Vergallo 21 Wesley Dunlop 22 Shane Gates

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : Ai, sometimes I think you make these false statements just to get a reaction from us poor Lions supporters.

But at least we should get more spectators at Ellis Park than the Sharks get at Kings Park, if we are back in Super Rugby

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : Thats not the point surely? So you would rather fill a stadium and have a team playing that doesn’t deserve to be there, than one that does with only 5000 supporters?

BTW why you so aggro? :D

And I’m aggro as a defence mechanism today!

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good old fashioned prejudice – are you related to Bobby, Keo or Cheeky by any chance?

The actual average crowd at Ellis Park for SR in 2012 was 23 313.
KP was 24 271 in 2012 and 22 453 up till the Kings game in 2013.
The problem with Ellis Park is that it looks empty even with 20 000 people there.

On the subject of “deserving” to be in Super Rugby its quite simple – no one does – just as no one deserves to be in the Premier division of the Currie Cup.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : My “deserve” sentiment is based on the fact that they actually played a promo/reg match and if they won it then they deserve it sir, not some free entry system used like the Kings got. BTW, are you sure you not Bobby? :D

@steve (Comment 17) : That is very very interesting… Maybe they should change the color of the seats to make it similar to MMD.

  • @Uli (Comment 22) : the fact that the Lions were allowed to fail – and fail consistently – for 6 years gives the lie to any statement about them “deserving” anything.

The Kings, in just one year, with only a few months to prepare and no possibility of signing players for more than a single campaign, did just as well as the proud 1000-year-old (or whatever) Lions did in their previous campaign.

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : No seriously, competition is good for rugby therefore I support the fact that there is a promo/reg game.

What I dont support is people who say the Kings deserve to be there based on what?

Do you think the Kings would have won a promo/reg game against the lions last year had they had to play it? I don’t think they would have. What the Kings did this year was impress me and allot of other people. But to say they should rather be in S15 rather than the lions based on the amount of supporters they draw to the game or because they played with hart does not clear them of the fact there might be a better team in SA rugby. Let the best team play S15, and let there be promo/reg games as this keeps rugby not only fit but also keeps our teams more on their toes.

You forget the Lions has played a few Semi’s in super rugby and also won the super 10 back in the day so to say the Kings did allot more in one season is being biased.

  • @robdylan (Comment 26) : Exactly what did the Lions do this year? Come on Rob. I am not saying other teams must do what they did, but they at least took initiative and tried something new, yes allot of it did not work out, but allot of it did. But the fact is they took it on them selves to keep rugby fit. What did the kings do over the years?

But back to what the other team is suppose to do… the Sharks then selves did not play 1995 super rugby as you should know what did we do? we prepared for a awesome CC to get back into it and won it. Then the next season we went to the S12 final and won the CC again.

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : The Kings situation is exacerbated by the fact that they do not play in the Premier division of the Currie Cup. You can build a decent squad by offering young players the prospect of Currie Cup rugby pretty much as Griquas do.

    @Uli (Comment 27) :
I would prefer a return, as unfeasible and unlikely as it is, to system of Currie Cup placing determining the allocation of Super Rugby franchises the following year with the franchise squads being supplemented by a draft system managed by SARFU (sure to be a shambles!)so that all of our top players get to play. I remember WP/Stormers also missed out on a season of SR back then. Much like the Sharks a strong base and good Currie Cup sustained them. The Kings have a vacuum.

Super Rugby has become the primary focus of our domestic teams, I believe, to the detriment of the Currie Cup and the overall health of our domestic competition.

  • And let the poaching begin. Already heard a rumor that the 8th man Engelbrecht is off to Bulls country and flanker vd Walt to Japan.
With Solomons gone, not too many will stay.

  • @robdylan (Comment 31) : I have the answer to this whole thing. SA have 5 super rugby places and 6 teams. Solution is a lottery draw. Teams playing in semi’s is rewarded by not being in the draw and the team that did not play super rugby automatically qualify for the next year. So for this year Bulls and Cheetahs would not be in draw and Lions would qualify. Sharks, Stormers and Kings woul be in the draw with loser missing super rugby 2014. Teams performing is rewarded and supporters know super rugby is not guaranteed for the next year so attendance at games should rise.

  • EP Rugby will never grow if they don’t play CC or SR, they will simply go back to feeding the other provinces like they have been doing for years

My feeling is they Kings should maybe have first focused on getting into the CC and stay there before they attempted super rugby .

Now they have to focus on 2 things at once and it seems they might get neither . that will be a huge setback for the Kings .

  • Super Rugby was a good move, just look at what it did for PE, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and the EP Kings players, no union should have looked at Vleis, Cornell du Preez, Wimpie v d Walt

Sergeal Petersen would not have been given a chance, if Elton was fit and Catrakilis stayed Province he would have been second choice and missed out on a good season.

No one thought of what would happen if Kings only play one year, now they losing some top players only to go sit on the bench at other provinces for 10/20 min a game.
