  • @woody (Comment 42) : guys, got to remember they were playing against the blind school today.

Not saying for a moment that they aren’t really promising kids, but even at u21 level against better opposition (like the Lions 2 weeks ago) they were found wanting. Let’s let them develop further at u21 level for now. Remember, Esterhuizen is just 19, Fisher just 20.

  • @woody (Comment 42) : Completely agree with this. Ludik is an awesome rugby player so he will do well whereever he plays in the backline, but he is best at full-back. Last year before his injury Ludik was the form fullback in South Africa and it was only a matter of time before he was noticed by the selectors and received his Bok call-up. I don’t have any inside info about what Ludik’s plans are at the end of the year, other than what I read here that the Sharks are trying to pursuade him to stay. Surely if they are serious about wanting him they should play him in his best position at 15?

Esterhuizen looks to have the skill and size to make a great outside centre next to Whitehead, so why not start him there for Currie Cup. I have always enjoyed Odwa as a player, but IMHO the Sharks are going backwards if they think Odwa is the future at fullback.

  • I understand that they were player weak opposition but still. You cannot use age as an excuse not to play them anymore. James O’Connor played super rugby at 17, Frans Steyn 19 and Pat Lambie and PSDT at similar ages. If you are good enough you are old enough. It bodes well for the near future. Ndungane will be good at currie cup but he will never be a top super rugby fullback. Ludik might be moving and playing him at centre only helps him make the choice to go. And if he is going then rather play a young guy like Esterhuizen or Van Tonder at fullback

  • @Bok-Clyde-Kiwi (Comment 46) : As long as they step up as seniors to the Sharks team and not some other South African or French side. Playing your old reliable players is all well and good if you want to ensure your win:loss ratio is good, like what heyneke Meyer is doing with the Boks at the moment, but it doesn’t do much for developing your team for the future.

  • @jonnow (Comment 48) : We have an under 21 competition to develop under 21 players. I’m not sure where this culture of entitlement comes from where 19 and 20 year old boys demand to be in the senior side, or else throw their toys and piss off overseas.

Esterhuizen played Vodacom Cup as an 18 year old and is first-choice for the under 21s in his first year out of school. The under 21 coaches are in constant communication with the seniors coaches – I mean hell, up until a few weeks ago BMH and Everitt WERE the Under 21 coaches.

Esterhuizen was included in the senior training camp and is listed in the senior squad.

  • @jonnow (Comment 48) : you have to remember we want to win the u21 competition aswell so by constantly calling up guys from age group rugby disrupts those teams-plus they risk injuries as they are not used to the physicality as Currie cup and age group rugby are miles apart-look at psdt, beale,o Connor-all promoted to the first team at a young age then they struggle with injuries and indiscipline (not in PSDTs case)

  • @robdylan (Comment 49) : Ja I hear what you say, but don’t you think it makes more sense to play Ludik in position at 15 rather than now try to re-tread Odwa as a fullback. I am also disappointed that they are using Butch at 10 instead of Zeilinga. As Woody said, if you are good enough you are old enough. The kiwi and Ozzie teams don’t seem to let a players age get in the way of selecting them when they are talented enough, just look at Cooper, Beale, Sam Cane, Will Genia James O’Connor and Julian Savea to name but a few.

IMHO South African coaches are too obsessed with selecting so-called “experienced” players instead of focusing on the player’s talent and potential.

  • @Bok-Clyde-Kiwi (Comment 50) : I think you can argue that PSDT did struggle with injuries when he was called up as a 19 year old.

The other thing to bear in mind is that most players aren’t mentally ready for senior rugby when still 19

  • I agree we need to promote youth but not simply just for the sake of it-the coaches must believe the player is ready and he must be adequately prepared eg.being included in next years super 14 squad and getting used to the routines and levels expected of them and maybe included on the bench-jaco van tonder is a good example

  • @Bok-Clyde-Kiwi (Comment 50) : Hmmmm…….so you equate experience with discipline, care to explain Butch’s disciplined temprament he displayed in the game against the Bulls?

I don’t believe there is any more of a gap between U21 and Currie Cup level than between Currie Cup and Superrugby level.

Anyway, will be rooting for the Sharks tonight,no matter who plays. Haven’t looked forward to a game this much in ages.

Well at least the last 3 weeks

  • @jonnow (Comment 51) : I completely agree. Just look at Morne Steyn. He had one amazing year in 2010. The next 2 years he was shit but was first choice flyhalf because of his so called experience. The same can be said of Pierre Spies. 2 clear examples of their obsession with experience

  • @jonnow (Comment 51) : I agree to some extent regarding zeilinga he will get his chance if as expected venter implements his squad rotation policy-i think ludik is going overseas so they are looking at odwa and van tonder as the fullbacks for next years super rugby-so they have to use ludik somewhere

  • We all agree the opposition were poor. But now how much better are they really than what Hansie Graaff has been up against in his time? 1st Division Currie Cup….yet he is considered good enough for Currie Cup and even super rugby. I’m not knocking him or anything and I bleieve the Sharks have found a really talented player but my point is you cannot say the physicality is very different between u21s, 1st division, vodacom cup and currie cup. The players in these divisions are all around the same size. Before 7s, Cheslin Kolbe had hardly played any professional rugby yet look where he is now. A year older than Esterhuizen and he is starting for Province tomorrow
