We’ve had a bit of clarity regarding former Sharks under 21 flyhalf Willie du Plessis, who’s been in the news a fair bit recently.
Du Plessis, the Affies boy who chose Durban after school, rather than Pretoria, returned to the Bulls and Tuks a few years back and has gone on to play a starring role for the latter over the last two Varsity Cup campaigns. He’s battled to make an impact at senior level in light blue, however, accumulating only a handful of Vodacom Cup caps along the way. It was earlier announced that he had opted to leave Pretoria to join the Lions, only for news to emerge today that he’s in fact on his way to join the Cheetahs.
In fact, both are true – it’s really really just a question of timing. Du Plessis has agreed to move to the Lions, but our information is that his two-year contract will only start after this year’s Currie Cup, on 1 November 2013. Deemed surplus to requirements by both Bulls and Lions, he will thus join the Cheetahs for the duration of the Currie Cup, on a three-month deal.
In another interesting development – also concerning a Willie – Blue Bulls hooker Willie Wepener looks set to re-join the Lions, as early as this week. I’m personally quite surprised at this, since Wepener played for the Bulls in the opening round, which I would have thought would preclude him from representing another team this season.Tweet
