Jean de Villiers captains a Springbok side featuring two new faces in the forward pack, as they take on the might of Argentina in Saturday’s first Rugby Championship test.

Juandre Kruger starts at lock ahead of Flip van der Merwe, while Duane Vermeulen takes over from the injured Pierre Spies at eighthman in the only changes to the run-on side that trounced Samoa in the Boks’ most recent outing. Further changes to the match 22 see Gurthro Steenkamp and Fourie du Preez come onto the bench.

South Africa: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Bjorn Basson, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Jean de Villiers (captain), 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Bismarck du Plessis, 17 Gurthrö Steenkamp, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Flip van der Merwe, 20 Siya Kolisi, 21 Fourie du Preez, 22 Pat Lambie, 23 Jan Serfontein.

  • Sub steyn for lambo and basson for rhule or aplon or mvovo and you have a great attacking team-mouth watering prospect of cruden vs cooper this weekend-pity ill be at work

  • Steyn ahead of Lambie is a fair call, if Lambie had stayed at 15 he wud be startin. But each to their own. Between Vermuelen and Kolisi there isnt much game time so hope they last, same with Juandre Kruger. Its still a good enough side to win by 10+ vs Argies. Im more interested to see the game plan. If we predictable we will get away with it this game but Aussies and All Blacks will be smiling

  • Lambie for Steyn.
    Bissie for Strauss.
    Anyone for Basson.
    Coetzee for Kolisi.
du Preez for Pienaar. In fact, drop Pienaar all together.
A real tight-head for Oosthuizen. Put him at loose-head for Steenkamp.
    The rest is fair.

I cant even be bothered to waste my time critiquing this team.
I could just as well copy and paste last year’s comments and could in all likelihood do the same when Heineken selects his team this time next year.

He doesnt change, neither does the team, and sadly neither does the gameplan.

There are some f strange calls there, nothing none of you haven’t highlighted already.

I’m so negative about Bok Rugby.

The funny thing is everyone (but me   ) expected more from Meyer. Last year it was a lack of experience, this year? (well lets wait and see -but im not optimistic)

  • @SuperEtts (Comment 39) : Lambie knows that we have his best interests at heart.

At this rate I won’t blame him if he decides to go overseas to clean his head out. Springbok rugby is a stumbling block under Her Majesty.

No Sharks player should be subjected to the mind control that has been used on the pre-taw-re-yaw-nurse. I was lucky to escape with my common sense in tact and untainted by that blue virus.

  • This is a poor Bok 23……Basson is useless, Mvovo and v/d Heever are better.

Serfontein is better than Jean, Lambie is better than Morne and the selection of Pienaar and du Preez as 9′s is laughable. v/Zyl and Reinach would have been better options.

Kruger is a proven test failure at 5. Would have made better sense to move Etzebeth to 5 and played Lood de Jager at 4.

Brussouw should have been at 6 and I would definitely have made a call to CJ Stander in Ireland to come join the Boks and start at 8.

Steenkamp ahead of Nkanyane, Kitshoff, Marcel v/d Merwe or Mellett is an insult.

This past its sell by date Bok side has no help in hell against Oz and NZ and will struggle to topple the Argies.

The sooner we fire Meyer the better – the man is clueless

  • @Saffex (Comment 41) : The new policies to be enforced in the Voda-Cup from next year (can’t discuss the details of it on Sharksworld ;-) ) will see more and more players leave for Europe and Japan.

If this trend overflows to CC and then SR, then we’re on the verge of enjoying the final years of half decent rugby in South Africa, the masses of talented players will leave for the milk and honey of Europe and Japan….so sadly whomever comes after [H]er [M]ajesty will not be able to fix anything.

Hopefully my gloomy outlook is all wrong and Springbok rugby will live happily ever after. But if I was a professional rugby player, my ticket overseas would have been booked and my bags packed, ready to go. :|
