Former Sharks utility forward Michael Rhodes has been elevated to the Western Province starting line-up, in the only change made by coach Allister Coetzee ahead of Saturday’s Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs.

Rhodes, who spent the bulk of the Super Rugby season on the sidelines, after an off-season move from the Lions, takes over in the number 4 lock position from young Gerbrand Grobler, with the latter shifting to the bench. Other changes to the bench see fit-again Tiaan Liebenberg replace Alistair Vermaak and young sevens specialist Ryan Nell come in for Berton Klaasen. Nell will make his debut for the side if he takes the field.

Western Province: 15 Gio Aplon, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 Pat Howard, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Cheslin Kolbe, 10 Gary van Aswegen, 9 Louis Schreuder, 8 Nizaam Carr, 7 Rynhardt Elstadt, 6 Deon Fourie (captain), 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Michael Rhodes, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Siyabonga Ntubeni, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Pat Cilliers, 18 Gerbrandt Grobler, 19 Rohan Kitshoff, 20 Nic Groom, 21 Kurt Coleman, 22 Ryan Nell.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 1) : Have to agree! Elstadt is a brilliant lock and should have been a Bok since 2011 when he manhandled Bakkies!!

Imagine Elstadt, Etzebeth and PSDT as the 3 locks in your matchday 23! The word DOMINATION springs to mind

  • Elstadt is a bit of a psycho, needs to learn to keep his cool. If he remains injury free his time will come.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 3) : We need a bit of psycho in the Bok team. I hope that his time comes soon but he needs to move back to lock.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 2) : Elstadt has manhandled many a player, from under 19 up, and often with a fist, boot or knee. Lets hope he can keep it clean.
