I for one would be quite livid if there was a reasonable expectation for promotion from my employers and that trust was broken. I would also consider other offers from rival companies.

At the moment, that’s the situation the current local rugby stars find themselves in. I’m sure they negotiated with local clubs with the expectation that they would be first in line for the green and gold.

South African clubs can’t compete with French and even Japanese pockets. In order to keep young talent here, there has to be some incentive. The honor of playing for the green and gold as well as the additional money for playing for the Springboks. Long term when a players contract comes up for renewal (like Eben Etzebeth for example) and he is the best in his position he will easily be able to make the choice to move to France knowing that he won’t have to sacrifice his place in the national team. Also when the teams realize our selection policy is shifting, they will target our younger players over New Zealand and Australia’s.

If there is a player that we feel we need in the set up, SARU needs to bring them back. Francios Louw just re-signed with Bath, they should have made him an offer and helped a local union secure him.

Our local rugby is strong, we have experience and talent in each position across the board.

For next year’s Rugby Championship if the match day 23 looked something like this, I would be very happy.

1 Tendai Mtawarira
2 Adriaan Strauss
3 Jannie Du Plessis
4 Flip van der Merwe
5 Eben Etzebeth
6 Heinrich Brüssow
7 Willem Alberts
8 Duane Vermeulen

9 Piet van Zyl
10 Johan Goosen

11 JJ Engelbrecht
12 Jean De Villiers
13 Francois Steyn
14 JP Pieterson
15 Willie Le Roux

16 Lourens Adriaanse
17 Bismarck du Plessis
18 Coenie Oosthuizen
19 Pieter-Steph du Toit
20 Arno Botha
21 Siya Kolisi
22 Patrick Lambie
23 Francios Hougard

  • Heyneke Meyer is a doo doo head.

The policy should be that if you wish to play for South Africa you should live in South Africa.
Meyer is being obtuse in not doing so .

It is almost as if he is trying to do things different to his predecessors, or could it be that if that policy weren’t in place he couldn’t select half his mates?

Will we ever beat the all blacks under him? :???:

  • I for one would love to see a fully SA based team play a fully overseas based team prior to the start of the international season.
That would give us a very good indication of who our best players are and we would also be able to gauge the strength of our local rugby.

  • Im not sure Etzebeth is the best in his position. He doesn’t do the locking basics well enough; his cleaning at the breakdown is horrid and ive yet to see him use his shoulders in a tackle! His line out work is great ,however.

Our pack lacks balance .FLouw ,Alberts dont have the out and out pace to compete with the All Black pack.

For me it is imperative that we start Flip ahead of Kruger and find room for Kolisi.

  • I would replace 3 players from Saturdays team, Kruger at lock who adds nothing, Ruan at scrummie whose to slow and hardly ever has any decent darts around the ruck, and Basson at wing who doesn’t have any physicality and can’t tackle. If available bakkies, Fourier du Preez and Jp pietersen are no brainers

  • @RuckingFun (Comment 4) : I feel exactly the same. Let Pienaar and Kruger enjoy their overseas teams, we have better options at home.

I would think HM’s reasoning for most of these overseas picks is that apart from Louw, Guthro and Pienaar, all played super rugby this year, therefore still “local”. Although Steyn, Louw and du Preez are the only ones who truly add value to the side.
